Not sure really. I like the school but Des Moines is definitely my first choice. It seems like there are a lot of business people that run the school (the president is a J.D.) which is kind of a turn off. Seems like they care about education there second to other priorities. Just the feeling I got yesterday anyway.

Still a good program with above average board-pass rates and faculty. We'll see, it's probably 2nd or 3rd on my list now. What are your feelings about KCUMB, from what you know already?

I interviewed yesterday as well. I liked the school and the Genesis cirriculum sounds cool. The faculty and students were extremely nice! I stayed with 3 second year students and they were incredibly nice and had great thing to say about their school. What i didn't like is that the campus does not have wireless internet. but overall, i will be happy to go there. by the way, the area is not that ghetto, or atleast i didn't think so.

I interview on Tuesday so I'll be checking things out as well. I'm glad about the input everyone has put in. Little worried about the area. We'll have to see.

glad to hear the results are mostly good. i think the genesis curriculum sounds cool, too. also, it seems like they don't have a bias towards people who just want to do family practice, which i'm not leaning towards. being is kc also is appealing to me because it's close to my family and is a big enough city where i can feel comfortable that my husband can find work and continue to take classes. and, it's just dirt cheap to live there in comparison to portland.

honestly, it doesn't seem like a big deal to me that the school is in a bad neighborhood.

genesis program means they take a system based approach. so, you will never have biochemistry or histology class, instead you will learn about systems one at a time. also, the neighborhood is not that bad, so don't worry about it until you see it for yourself. also, they said about 50% enter specialties, which is high for both DO and MD programs.

I'm kinda disappointed they didnt give us a recent match list 👎 The opening presentation did, however, give you an idea to where graduates did match though: JHU, Harvard, Mayo..... 🙄 , real helpful info 😴 oh well, back to work

I don't remember any either, although there was a fly-dressed dude from financial aid asking us if we had any questions about how to afford med school. He was the only representative, besides my interviewers and the student tour guides, that I saw on a consistent basis. This reinforced to me how it seems that money is the highest priority there, not necessarily the students or education we receive. The only source of outside funding for KCUMB seemed to be military scholarship, health service corps, and government loans.

Oh, and the cafeteria sucks ass there. Bring a lunch to your interview!

did they bring up private loans at all? based on kcumb's cost, you're going to need to exceed government loans if you don't get a scholarship. it's sort of irritating to read school's financial aid info because most of them never have any links for the private loan info, which is really important to most students.

they did give us a packet of financial aid "info." which was really just a bunch of pamphlets about military hpsp and nhsc scholarships. Some FAFSA info but a lot of useless "how to budget for college" crap geared towards high school students. They weren't very informative at all. Plan on having to do a lot of work on your own...

personally, i don't think having a very present financial aid guy is a bad thing because i'm very, very interested in how i'm going to finance my education. however, it sounds like he didn't tell anybody anything that they didn't already know. duh, you can get staffords or join the military. unfortunately, money is pretty important when you're looking at borrowing in the six figures. 🙁
