MS-3 who is doing a 6 weeks family med elective. Been working with a resident and we are flirty towards each other, alot in common etc. What is the normal policy with maybe hanging/going on a date etc. I mean this is the only rotation i do at the hospital where she is a resident.

It's ok to ask her out, but not until you are done with the whole rotation and grades are submitted.

The faculty at our school addressed the issue preemptively at the start of third year. This is the answer they gave.

I had an ob/gyn attending who was also a sex therapist who recommended to wait until you were a third over with your rotation, so that if she said yes, you'd have an extra special time and if they said no you were mostly through with the rotation. Now this is for people who are not grading you. I encountered this twice in 3rd year and 4th year. got the number one time at the very end of a rotation, found she had a boyfriend another time with 1/3 left. Got honors in the latter rotation by the way.

That's idiotic. It's inappropriate to ask while the person is still in charge of you. It could majorly blow up in your face, with impact on your clinical grades and even professionalism forms or negative comments in your deans letter. Do the smart thing.

Let's back up here. Why on Earth would anyone think about dating a medical resident?

Thanks, guess ill just wait till the end of the rotation. Will not be back in that hospital anyway so after the rotation is over its shouldnt be a big deal.

Refer to the portion where I said my advice does not apply to people with grading power over you. Also note that when the person said no and I got rejected, there was no grade impact. The OP should use his brain as he knows the situation with a lot more subtlety than we do.

Our dean addressed this. While it probably wouldn't be smart on your part if anything went wrong we were told that it would be an impropriety on the part of the resident since they are the one "in charge."

So you can date residents - but she could get in trouble for it.

It doesn't even matter if the resident has grading power over you. All it takes is one of the other residents or an attending with a chip on her shoulder to get wind of the situation. This can definitely bring negative attention upon you. Just because you got lucky doesn't mean anyone else should try it.

how the heck do you hit on residents? i find myself in such an inferior position to them cause i'm a noob third year that i don't have any self respect, i doubt they have any respect for me, and this all leads to extreme unattractiveness.

props to you sir

You underestimate being ridiculously good looking.

I agree. There's too much talk going on here and no action.

Bang her dude. Just make sure you do a good job in case you're in the Passing range and need a boost to put you in Honors category.

Cmon who hasn't heard of students dating residents...

Let's up the ante here - student & attending. After the rotation but while other fellow students may be evaluated in subsequent rotations.

Go! 👍

Props to Iceman's lightning fast literature search skills.

Favorite line:

"But Jed was an older medical student and had a lot of life experience."

Guys, it's not always skills you learn as a medical student that you bring to the hospital

Dayum!!

"He ended with this: 'Maybe the thought of going on a date with a medical student is just too outrageous, and if so, I understand. But at the very least, know that you have the kind of smile that made me feel I would regret it for a long time if I didn't at least ask.' "

Play on, player.
Yeah, I'm not gonna lie, I would have strongly advised him not to do that. Good for him for putting himself out there and getting what he wanted though 😎

Talk about a mouthful for names though! Bethlehem Loolseged Abebe and Jed Thomas Wolpaw 😀

I know a student who dated, then married an attending. They are still married, after over 20 years, and have several kids.

Nobody seemed to have a problem with it...they are both super great and professional folks (in different specialties). We were just happy for them...awesome couple!

there's a resident on my rotation who i'm planning on asking out, though we haven't really worked together that much, too bad we were never on call together.... if i were to venture a guess i'd say it probably won't work but im done with the rotation soon and ill never see her again and if she's like, eww you're a med student, im gone the next week so there's nothing to lose except my gigantic ego

Damn, I would go on a date with the guy, and I'm a heterosexual guy.

I always give the same advice: If you going to catch crabs, don't go fishing off the company pier.

So whats up? Did you hit it yet?

All this talk about asking out a higher up. What about a resident asking out a med student when the rotation is over? Do you think that is more or less appropriate? I'd totally do it, just want to hear some opinions.

I have a friend who married one. He was an intern, she a 3rd year. He didn't really supervise her directly. He asked her out after the rotation was over.
