Hey. I just wanted to get some opinions on American University of Antigua. I was initially a pre-dental applicant, but considered medicine and applied and was accepted. I am finishing up graduate school with a Master's of Biomedical Science. (graduated college in 2006). I just want to know whether or not one can place in a superior residency in the United States if performing very well on the USMLE's, out of a school like AUA. I know it is relatively knew compared to the other carribean schools, but it seems to be very legit. From what I have heard from my roommate who is in medical school and others, it is really much more important where one does their residency than where one attends medical school. Also, the faculty at AUA looks impressive and they seem to be expanding a great deal. Does anybody know anyone who finished at AUA this year and placed in a surgery residency such as opthomology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, etc.???

AUA should be a second choice because you will not be able to license in all 50 states. You should try Ross, Saba, SGU and AUC first.

You're better off applying to the big four schools first. In all honesty, I have yet to hear of anyone from AUA matching in any of the fields you listed above. Those specialties are even out of the league of most SGU or Ross grads, unless their applications are absolutely stellar. Now if you wanted to do family practice or IM, you might consider AUA, and only as a backup option, since it is not approved in all fifty states yet.

I believe that the only state AUA is not approved in is California. It has approvals in all of the others, and even if it doesn't, does it really affect me at all if I do not plan on ever working in the few states it does not have approval in? If I build a "stellar" application, by rocking Step 1 and getting good grades (at AUA), which is what I assume you mean, wouldn't I still be in the running for matching in one of the very hard to get surgery residencies in the US, because they will weigh step 1 and grades more than anything else???

No not really the only state, it is not approved in Texas and non Cali means about 2 other states also so thats at least 4.............................

I believe IN and TN, NM are problems for licensure as well, and Kansas 15 years rule. More States may be adopting that "Cali list". It's not exactly the best way of measuring just how good or bad that school might be, but many States don't have any rules and just blindly copy Cali holding it as a gold standard.
To the OP: It's really hard to know where you will wind up practicing, especially if you are younger. It's not only you, but your family, or some super job / business opportunity that may require you to have a medical license in the States which will be permanently closed for you . But all of that does not make AUA a bad school. It's just still new, but appears to be catching up fast. I have many friends who transfered there in late 2004-earlier 2005 from ROSS. PPl who started AUA have a lot of experience form working earlier at ROSS, SGU, and some of the U.S schools. They understand the nature of the business they are in, and I guess, have pretty good connections. So I would say all in all if you really undrstand the limitations and are O.K with that then go for it. I remeber when in early 2004 I was accepted to ROSS and Saba at same time, and had some reservations about going to ROSS (it was waaaay too close to the beginning of the semester). But all the "experts" and the armchair generals were dising SABA b/c it was not yet Cali-approved. However they did get it later that year, that's not the case with AUA b/c I don't think they've even applied for Cali yet.
Anyway, it's your call, but AUA is not a bad choice at all.

Best of Luck
