I am a US-born IMG trying to apply for Emergency Medicine for the 2014 match. I was wondering if it is worth it to do an audition elective (with the goal of getting a SLOR), at Arrowhead, even though I cant match there because their EM residency program is DO only. I have one other EM rotation lined up at another hospital, but was wondering if I should try for another EM program or take the Arrowhead rotation? Thanks-

Their SLOR may not be as valuable since their program is AOA and not ACGME. Is there a particular reason you want to rotate there, as opposed to say - USC, which would yield you a reasonable SLOR?

I got a SLOR from ARMC since this was my 'home' program, but I'm not sure it carried as much weight as my USC and UCI EM U/S SLORs.

It is affiliated with my school (SGU), and Arrowhead had an emergency rotation that still had available spots. Most US schools/affiliated hospitals dont take IMGs for audition electives in the summer months. That being said, do you think a SLOR from an AOA-accredited program would be better than an SLOR from a hospital that doesnt have a residency program (say from the director of an ED)?

It might have greater weight locally with other EM programs in socal, but it's never going to come close to a ACGME SLOR.

any particular reason why? it seems like arrowhead has a great EM program and is one of the busiest EDs in the country. seems like a SLOR from there telling any other PD that you can cut it would be pretty good.

arent the DO and MD matches combined next year anyway? So couldnt IMGs apply to Do residencies? Or am i wrong?

Have you tried places that have taken SGU med students and/or grads in the past?

Why don't you ask some PD's how they feel about it? Better than asking us non-PDs?

Wait what? After 2015 can anyone apply to DO residencies? No more limit?

this is what u should be doing. an actual audition rotation...it will likely get u an interview - which you will need!!
dont waste that month at a program that will never take you!

This. There's more to audition rotations than a SLOR.

Unfortunately a lot of places that take SGU grads for EM residency wont take us for audition electives in the summer months, as those spots are reserved for US students. So at this point Im just trying to get the best EM rotation I can, and hopefully get a strong SLOR out of it. Thanks for all the help-

This thread is obviously meant for IMGs, and directed towards 3rd years who haven't yet found EM rotations.

Stay away from Arrowhead. Thats a DO program. Rotating there isn't going to get you an interview. As an IMG, you need interviews and you need to rotate at a residency program that can give you an interview and rank you highly because they know you and know you are a hard worker. That should be your goal. Also, don't even think about booking an EM elective at a hospital that doesn't have an EM residency program involved. Sounds like you are stuck out in California for rotations. SGU doesn't have any other EM programs in California... so you need to look elsewhere.

We have a bunch of residency programs that are in-network and you can consider "home," since you won't have to pay or complete an "out of network" application. Have you thought about NY Methodist, Brooklyn Hospital, Lincoln, Newark Beth Israel, Hackensack, Mercy St Vincent, or St. John?

Need out of network advice? Look through the SGU match list and try to call the programs and see if they take IMGs for rotations.

Personally, I was accepted for rotation at SUNY Upstate, Beth Israel (Manhattan) and UMDNJ-NJMS. Those could be options for you too. Also, don't forget you can get SLORs from Peds EM rotations.

I started my first EM rotation in August, did 3 back to back to back and got enough letters into ERAS by mid October. Maybe my lack of having a complete file early on hurt my chances with some programs but so long as you apply to a bunch of programs you will get some interviews.

Im actually from the NY area. Heres the status on EM electives @ SGU-affiliated hospitals for July...

NY Methodist- 1 spot for SGU student in July. Rest are for US students
Lincoln- booked until after we graduate
Maimo- doesnt take SGU students for EM electives anymore
St. Johns- gives preference to students doing cores there. limited space for other students
Brooklyn Hospital Center- booked until December
Miami Childrens- must do at least 3-4 rotations there (cant apply to just one)
NJ Hospitals- cant go to these! Did the GSP. mistake.
...
Elmhurst Hospital- "affiliated" with Mt. Sinai. worth doing an audition elective there?

as far as I know these are the only SGU hospitals with EM residencies, which is why I was originally asking if a SLOR from Arrowhead wouldnt be half bad? i have a rotation at Brooklyn in August, maybe I should try to get 2 SLORs then?
