I asked this question on the allopathic forum, but wanted insight from the DO perspective. Are audition rotations required for competitive or any DO specialties? With the 2015 changes with the combined match, do you still think that audition rotations will play an integral role for DO students. Trying to figure this out, since auditions can be expensive/inconvenient and some have debated if they are worth it.

It is a big deal at the osteopathic residencies, and even with the combined match it will still make a large impact on your chances at those places. Old habits will die hard. As for allopathic programs, auditions don't matter much at all, and may even hinder your chances if you don't perform well.

Audition rotations are mostly required for competitive AOA programs, like ortho, urology, radiology, etc. Most AOA ortho programs will not grant you an interview even if you're #1 in your class with a top comlex score if you don't rotate at their program. I'd be surprised if this changes in the future.

Acgme programs, in general, do not expect you to rotate at their program.

A current 4th year allopathic medical student was rotating in my ER and we spoke at length about the process. He told me that he did several audition rotations for his general surgery residency to better his chances. He made it seem like the auditions were pretty important.
