I'm a rising senior, and I was wondering if taking the MCAT in August affects my chances for admission in competitive schools. Everyone says to apply early, but by taking the August MCAT, my applications will most likely be rushed or delayed. Does it make a difference?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Submit AMCAS now if you haven't already. You won't be in the first round of interviews, but if you get your apps in before the August rush you won't be last either.

Taking the August MCAT probably does affect your chances in that you probably won't have any chance of getting in the first round, but it's not the end of the world or anything like that.

collegechic, have you submitted your amcas yet?

It won't matter if you destroy the MCAT. If you wind up with average or slightly below average scores, it could make a difference.

I was faced with this same decision and ultimately decided to apply later... I basically didn't want to apply without knowing what my scores were... plus I needed to build up some more extracurriculars. But yes, I agree with what the other posters said -- it shouldn't affect you too much if you're otherwise a strong candidate. You'll just be doing interviews later in the year.

i got in with my august mcats, and more than at one school. Just make sure to submit your amcas appl in asap. most schools now send out secondaries w/o waiting for your mcat scores. While you may not have time to complete the secondaries while you studying for aug mcat, you can do all of them in a week or 2 after the test. that is how I spent my summer vacation 😀

august mcat doesn't diminish your chances. I submitted all my 2nd by end of august, got my score back in mid-oct, had an interview lined up at the end of oct. Went to all the interviews that I wanted to go to by the end of xmas. got first admission before Jan. Depending on the strength of your application, and also sometimes luck, you can do very well with august scores, perhaps even better than some april MCATers.

What if you are taking the Aug MCAT and you have submitted your apps.. but you have a record of the previous MCAT score is not too good.. will the admiss. staff cut you before they get to see the Aug score? If yes, should I hold off on submitting my apps until the Aug MCAT is done?

I know that it varies from case to case but on an estimation base... how much more time do you really get on the MCAT for ADD? Anybody know?

Do not under any circumstances submit an AMCAS with an August MCAT. It's not worth it. You won't be complete at schools until Sept. It's competitive enough to get into medical school being complete in July. Prepare to sit for the exam earlier or wait a year.
