Hi Guys, I've been spying on SDN for a long time but never wrote nething before. I got many help from here, and I just wanted to share some info with you guys and hope this helps someone.

I recently accepted to dental program in University of Sydney and will be heading there in 2 months (their program starts in Feb). Of cuz I applied to US schools (7 of them) and recieved 2 interviews so far. However, I canceled my application completely after I decided to go to Sydney.

And I am telling you it wasn't easy for me to do this.

There are many ppl in SDN dont know there is other option for you and possibly for some people it could be better.

First of all, currently Australian dental degree is not recognized in US or Canada. However, U of sydney have applied for US/Canada accreditation and it is under review. They are aiming to get fully accredited by 2012 or 2013.

This was the biggest concern for me cuz eventually I will want to come back to US/Canada. But I changed my mind after I have talked to some students in Usyd doing their specialties in US right now.

If you want to go for speciality after D school, then consider Australian schools such as U of Sydney and Melbourne U.

It is way cheaper than any US or Canadian Schools I have seen so far.
Oh also did I mention it comes with killer weather, nice beaches and lots of traveling opportunities?

Also, at Usyd you start doing clinic/patient care in your first year at University dental hospital right away, so you will be well prepared and experienced. U of Sydney has top dental facilities and ranked as one of top universities in the world.

Due to crazy market crash in US, I cannot really get financial support from my parents and this was the main reason why I decide to go there, to be honest.

I am pretty sure this route is not for everyone, however it doesn't hurt to consider and hope you do. I was lucky that one of my friends told me to look at Aussie schools and happy that I found out about it.

I know some people will tell me that I am crazy to give up my interviews and go to Sydney. But I rather spend 4 years in somewhere I will actually love to live and have less worries about tuition.

University of Hong Kong has an amazing dental program as well, completely taught in English. Tuition is about $80,000 US, TOTAL, though it is VERY competitive to get in. Not to mention it is 6 years! UoP time 2 lol.

Congrats, and very interesting. Would you mind sharing your stats? How competitive are the australian schools relative to US schools?

LAst yr when I did not get admitted to any d-schools, I looked into Australian schools. I also got all the applications and filled them out. Contacted so many schools & spoke to so many staff members & I was really convinced to go there. They made it sound like it is so easy to get in. But then I decided to re-take DAT and give it one more chance. If the second time does not work out, I will be applying to AUS for sure! yea I heard about that accreditation too! Hope it comes true!

why would a school in Australia get US accreditation?

It seems like you would still have to do a IDP back in the states...

Kangaroo! Koala! 😍

You said that you have problems with financing your education, so how you want to finance your education in AUS unless it is free.

I'm impressed with the fact that his parents could and were willing to pay for his dental education if stock market didn't crush.

Does anyone know if you can practice dentistry in Australia if you are a U.S trained dentist? For that matter, can you practice anywhere in the world if you are a U.S. trained dentist?

very interesting...

Does anyone know what kind of stats one needs to get in?

yea i find it very interesting and new to most of us. but how are you going to pay for tuition? do they have something similar to FAFSA where you can get government supported loans (with no or little interest) even if you are an alien and a foreign student?

I would consider it if it weren't for Vegemite. Seriously, who eats that?

What is the website? I would love to go to Australia.

For people interested in Aussie dental program, u can go to international medicine section on SDN. They are bunch of people already studying dentistry and medicine in Australia.

And if you get in one of aussie schools as med or dent student, you can get bank loan just like u will get one for US/Canada d schools. I am from Canada and I got my line of credit from TD for 150K for Usyd no problem.
