Hi Guys, I've been spying on SDN for a long time but never wrote nething before. I got many help from here, and I just wanted to share some info with you guys and hope this helps someone.
I recently accepted to dental program in University of Sydney and will be heading there in 2 months (their program starts in Feb). Of cuz I applied to US schools (7 of them) and recieved 2 interviews so far. However, I canceled my application completely after I decided to go to Sydney.
And I am telling you it wasn't easy for me to do this.
There are many ppl in SDN dont know there is other option for you and possibly for some people it could be better.
First of all, currently Australian dental degree is not recognized in US or Canada. However, U of sydney have applied for US/Canada accreditation and it is under review. They are aiming to get fully accredited by 2012 or 2013.
This was the biggest concern for me cuz eventually I will want to come back to US/Canada. But I changed my mind after I have talked to some students in Usyd doing their specialties in US right now.
If you want to go for speciality after D school, then consider Australian schools such as U of Sydney and Melbourne U.
It is way cheaper than any US or Canadian Schools I have seen so far.
Oh also did I mention it comes with killer weather, nice beaches and lots of traveling opportunities?
Also, at Usyd you start doing clinic/patient care in your first year at University dental hospital right away, so you will be well prepared and experienced. U of Sydney has top dental facilities and ranked as one of top universities in the world.
Due to crazy market crash in US, I cannot really get financial support from my parents and this was the main reason why I decide to go there, to be honest.
I am pretty sure this route is not for everyone, however it doesn't hurt to consider and hope you do. I was lucky that one of my friends told me to look at Aussie schools and happy that I found out about it.
I know some people will tell me that I am crazy to give up my interviews and go to Sydney. But I rather spend 4 years in somewhere I will actually love to live and have less worries about tuition.
