I have been doing a ton of research about getting my DVM from Australia (USYD specifically), but I have seen a couple forums mention that it is really hard to get internships and residencies in the US with an Australian degree? Does anyone have anymore info? TIA

I don't know about internships/residencies specifically, but I know that the extra exams you have to take to get licensed (PAVE/BSCE) are notoriously difficult. I don't see why it would be any different once you're past those as long as the rest of your application information is competitive, except maybe that it's harder to network from overseas

University of Sydney is AVMA accredited so to my knowledge graduates shouldn’t have to take additional exams to be able to work in the US other than the NAVLE.

@DrinkWater95 possibly would be able to give more insight

I think part of the issues with graduates from foreign schools in US internships and residencies relates to visa and prevailing wage requirements being difficult enough that many schools just do not take non-Americans anymore. So a non-American with that Australian degree you might have difficulty finding a US training program to work with you, but if you’re a US citizen already who is just wanting to go to school in Aus and come back to the US after graduation, that shouldn’t be an issue for you because of your citizenship. As long as you pass any licensing tests (just NAVLE if the school is AVMA accredited, PAVE/ECFVG if it is not) your degree would be recognized just fine in theory.

Yes it is accredited and I will only have to take the NAVLE + whatever state licensing exam is required to practice back in The States. No extra testing required compared to US schools.

I’m looking into doing internship and residency after graduation and it shouldn’t be an issue given I’m a US citizen (as JaynaAli pointed out)

I must ask, what year are you looking to apply? It is very unlikely Australia will be letting in people from overseas in the near future. I can’t get back into the country if I decide I need to leave and many of my classmates are stuck overseas unable to get back into the country. There’s currently and outbreak of covid over here and getting international students back into the country is low on the priority list.

Oh that’s great. I would look into their BVB/DVM program - I would have done this option had I learned about it sooner. You do 2 years of BVB (Bachelor’s of Veterinary Biology) and then 4 years of the DVM. So 2 less years than most US schools. Many of my classmates are younger than me due to this program.

yessir, thats what I've been looking at. Problem is there isn't a ton of info about the admissions process. I don't know how competitive it is. I read somewhere that Australian unis base entry on accedemics, more so than the US. It would be nice to know if I didn't have to kill myself with EC's to get in if they don't really care.

They definitely care in Aus, especially for the BVB/DVM entry because your application is mainly focused on your marks. For domestic students if you don't have the marks you won't get in, it doesn't matter how much animal experience you have, they won't even look at your application if your marks don't meet the cut-off.

I've got a 35 on my ACT, do you know how that would compare to an ATAR score? How competitive would this score be?
