Did the fact that you would work under your own license (DPM) and not under someone else's license attract you to this field...the autonomy aspect? There are other options in healthcare like PA, RN-CRNA, even some NPs that require you to be under a physician's license. My personality is such that I could not work under someone (being a junior associate as a new grad while working under your own license is different). Who else felt this way?

Wait for rotations, externships, residency.

You work under someone.

I am aware of that! I meant when pod school/residency is finished...When you are practicing...

It was definitely a factor. I don't have any delusions about "being my own boss" and whatnot since solo private practices are going the way of the dinosaur. But after studying something for 7 years, I'm sure I'll know my stuff well enough without needing a supervisor signing a sheet for me.

I believe what attracted me to Podiatry was the mix of medicine/surgery and being able to treat patients without referrals. That, along with helping people. When patients leave the office genuinely happy that you had helped them, that's all that matters.

I liked podiatry for the same reason as Dr. Marx. Wise man..

If you think about it, you will always have a boss. The patient. No they aren't smarter than you and they don't give you your license but they will judge your ability to diagnose and fix their problem. Maybe they won't agree with you sometimes!! Technically we are/will be working under someone who has to give us approval. If you (anyone, not pointing a finger at the OP) have a problem working under authority or as a member of a team then you better change your attitude and habits so you can. I find it very discouraging when I see physicians telling the patient how it is instead of helping them understand how it should be.

In short: A pod/most physicians will always have someone to report to.

Both pods I shadowed believe the solo practice is going by the way of the dodo, in this environment it makes a lot more sense to link into a group.

Having a boss too is not always a bad thing depending on the person. Keep your options open
