What is the average or normal cost for applying to a dental school?

All depends how many schools you apply too and how many interviews you go on. Can cost from as low as $300 if you apply to one school and its near by so interview expense is low or it can cost over $3000 if you apply to many schools and fly to a lot of interviews.

So its all up to you.

i think 6-8 schools are efficient.
depends on your stat, estimate schools taht you can get in.
and apply 1-2 sch that u really want to go.
3-4 that u want, and u can get in.
and 1-2 sch that u can definitely get in.

What Brocnizer says is true. Especially with the number of applicants and quality of applicants on the rise, it's going to get more and more competitive.
