I'm an average medical student attending a California medical school. I just got my STEP1 score and it was average. I'm involved in one research project that's unrelated to EM that will most likely get published next year or so. Other than that I haven't done much else. Is it possible for me to land a residency in California? Any suggestions how I can improve my resume these next 2 years?

Rock step 2. Honor your EM rotations. Get good SLOEs.

Seriously though, it's been beat to death on other threads. There aren't any secrets or tricks. The only thing that will give you problems if you do all those is limiting yourself to just a specific location. If you're concerned with your application you have to decide what's more important to you: staying in California or getting an EM residency. If it's the latter, you need to apply more broadly.

Get involved with your home program. Maybe a research project with an em attending, or the PD if possible.

If they know and like you, that will help your chances of matching there.
