A fellow student in my physics class told me that if you take the MCAT more than once, say within a span of 18 months, e.g. that your scores are AVERAGED.....Is that an individual
school policy , an AMCAS policy or????

Thanks

Your friend may be confusing the MCAT with the LSAT. For the MCAT your scores are not averaged. If you take it 3 times you will have 3 scores, not an average and you do not take the best scores from each section to combine for the highest possible score like the SAT.

The LSAT is a different ball game all together. I'm pretty sure that the scores are averaged if you take it more than once. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Zero Cool

and the best of luck to you!!!!

It's true that AMCAS doesn't average the scores of those who have taken the MCAT more than once; they simply report them as separate sets of scores to the schools you designate. As far as I know, though, each school has its own way of handling multiple scores. Some schools may take only the most recent set; some may take the highest set; others may take the average of all sets. The only way to know for sure is to ask the admissions office of the school in question.

Good luck!

I have never heard of people taking the highest score from each section of the SAT. When did this start?

Arch,
I can feel your pain!

Although I just took the MCAT for the first time this August (and don't have the scores yet), I'm already resigning myself to taking it again. Mostly because all of my other pre-med friends made sub-30's the first go round (with the exception of one...he made a 34 the first time, after studying for FOUR WHOLE DAYS and took it again with me just to see if he could ace it) In any case, taking it 3 times and having your scores jump back and forth has to be pretty infuriating! Because most schools frown on taking it more than that, I'd just concentrate on making the rest of your app a beautiful as possible. I'm sure you know the drill...Good Luck!

oh yeah, I do know this....some SCHOOLS average the scores (AMCAS does not have anything to do with this), while others will take the most recent try, and yet others will take the highest score. It depends on the school. If you look very closely at each school's literature (or on-line) it sometimes says what they do. Most of the time, it doesn't.
