Hi everyone. Let me say that I decided to take this holiday away from my Surg Sub-I at the local VA to try to get my life right in applying toward residency in anesthesiology (gas I guess is what most folks call it here), and this site has been a real eye opener...
I'm at a "top tier" or high 2nd tier med school (U. of Mich) who also has a pretty decent Gas program (our PD pioneered the Pulse Ox)....anyway, I'm not the avg med stud in that I had some academic difficulties early on in M1,2 and 3 yrs that basically put me back 1-2 years behind my original class, but after taking everything M3 year (surg, peds, etc.) before my M3 Anes rotation, I knew Gas was the way to go for me (other choice: family, IM). I honored that month, and subsequently H'd my 4th yr month and a Peds research mo. (no publication). As it stands, I'll be finished in Aug '05, match in Mar '06 and walk in June '06.
So here's my issue: I will be awarded my license Aug-Sept 05 pending receipt of (passing) Step 2 CK/CS, but I will need to work in btw Aug/Sept and July '06 (start of residency). I have little desire toward research, and it seems like no options out there are available to use my degree AND get paid (to cover living expenses that fin. aid used to). I'm talking about making $25K or more for that period, just to get by AND to cover relocation (I'm looking for programs in the South (NC around to TX) mainly, but not ruling out anywhere just yet). Any suggestions on how I may effectively and financially fill the void? Thanks a lot.
