Following Orgo in 2003 I was considered for the merck outstanding achievement in organic chemistry but did not place first overall, this was on my app for the 2007 cycle and am wondering if it should be included again, or if it should have even been on the first application

thank you for your time,

J

Perhaps if you had a good reason for not placing first and at least placed in the upper numbers? Otherwise IMO, I wouldn't include it.

there were maybe 5-10 people who are considered by the chem dept each year, to me, it is an award.

should i still leave it off? im not really swimming in awards here.

Ya if the amount considered is low then mention that...how about doing some community service too boost your awards since you can knock that out pretty fast? Also, talk to a hospital volunteer director and tell them you will complete a certain amount of hours and in turn they will write you a paper...my radiology director was nice enough to write the paper ahead of time and I finished my hours accordingly.

isn't comm service in a different section than awards.

My deal is that I lack ots of that since ive been out of undergrad for 5 yrs, the first 3 were dedicated to helping the family business while the last 2 have been getting a master's and doing research.

any suggestions are appreciated

I would include it...just say you 1 of 5-10 people nominated for a prestigious award in your department...I really don't think most people are "swimming" in awards either, so I wouldn't worry if you don't fill out every possible space...I mean, all I had was a scholarship and Dean's List stuff.

Well no I know that community service alone is not an award its well..comm service lol, but what I meant to say was you can have something along the lines of like "Excellent Comm. Service" award or something of the sort just stating you did more than what was required...but ya none of us are swimming in awards like the previous poster said but you can get the ones that require less work and build up from there 😎

Thats the other thing - their is no space to describe the award or anything..all we can do is list what it was called.

That's true...well I would make sure you try and include "Nominee for...[so-and-so award]" in the title...if its something that you really want to get across to adcoms, maybe work it into your personal statement if you haven't already?

thank you all for the responses.

last go around (2007 cycle) i listed it as "consideration, outstanding performance in orgo" based on your responsed I will lsit it in a similar fashion.

also, is it worth holding off submitting until i boost comm service/volunteering or should i submit sooner? mind you that i will not be re-taking the dat until late aug (first dat was july 2006)

the rest of my app can be ready to be submitted this week (LORs and transcripts are in)

thanks again everyone

Exactly, I just had dean's list and some freshman merit award (dont know exactly what is was for, but I threw it in so I wouldn't only have dean's list on the app ).
