Does anyone else think this away rotation process sucks? I am so sick of these stupid applications. I mean, really, proof of immunization, proof of malpractice insurance, cv, personal statement, proof of HIPPA training, proof of OSHA training, transcript, USMLE scores, proof of good health, deed to your home, sperm sample.....

There should be a contract schools could sign so that a simple letter from your dean would cover everything.

My rant is done.

i got mine done at county hosp for free when i was rotating there (employee health rules), i think you can do the same if you're at the va.

Its funny, I started the whole process so pumped to rotate at places, get to do what I actually want to on a rotation and be one of those students that is always all gung ho. I have quickly become disenchanted in a sea of paperwork, delays, and filled rotation spots. I still believe that once I get to these places though I will get my enthusiasm back.....

Trust me - it is only the beginning. When you are done applying to each rotation, make copies of everything and keep them in a safe place - you may need them for residency and other things. It will be good to keep all of these things handy (including every report from the USMLE, your transcripts from undergrad/med school, addresses for letters of recommendation, a copy of your diploma's, etc).

Nice advice. I did 3 away rotations and forgot to make copies of the first place and of course it was lost. Then started copying and came in handy on the last rotation. Also, not sure how your school does the evaluations, but if they are not on any special paper, go to the course scheduler and ask him/her if you can have a copy just in case the one they send in the mail gets lost. 2/3 of mine lost it, but I was thinking ahead and had it handy! Of course this won't work if your school has to have it notarized or something special like that.

Either way, I had good and bad experiences with the overall process, but would do it over again the same way because I liked to find out how other places operate.

You know it's bad when you start rearranging your potential rotations based on the application requirements (BOO 👎 : $100 for a program low on your list... OSHA certification within 12 months, YEY 👍 : Willing to schedule/confirm over the phone without even knowing your name).

Fortunately, I started early and I have confirmations from 4 of 7, but it has been a HEADACHE!

I thought you could only do 3 and only 2 in the same speciality unless you take 'vacation months'... Maybe thats just my school though...

But from what I understand my school policy is a max of 4 aways and no more than 3 elective rotations in the same specialty over the entire year.

Each school has its own regulations.. Some, like us, have no restrictions on away rotations.

for my away in august i have to get an fbi criminal background check....takes 6-8 weeks to process....just got sent back my money order from the state because the lady at the grocery store who made out the order made it for $25 instead of $24 and the state will not accept anything except exact payment. now i get to resend my fingerprints and go to the back of the line. possibly won't have the check done in time for the rotation. SO ANGRY right now i can't even speak.

It's actually 6 4-week electives and one 2-week elective.

Every school is different. I know some schools that have the whole year open. We have some restrictions on what those months have to be, but they are up to you where you do them. I have no interest in staying in the area of the country where my med school is, so I am hitting the road for those 6 months.

Just to calm the confusion further - I am not doing 7 EM electives. My school doesn't allow more than two electives in the same thing either. But, there are many other fields that relate to emergency medicine (or not). I still want to check out the hospitals.

I can't even find a good rotation that has any spots in September. It seems like they fill up all their own spots with students from their school. It would be nice if they held a few for students from visiting schools.

Depending on the program, it may help to contact the director personally. I ran into the same problem and when I expressed my interest in that specific program, they were suddenly able to fit me in. Also, I just received an email from a program that originally said no, but has now opened additional spaces for rotators. Keep trying.
