When you apply for aways, do you apply to more than one program for the same time slot and hope you get one?

Does it look bad to - for example - apply to Institution A and Institution B, hope that you get one of them, end up getting both and then turning down the offer from B? Does it hurt your chances at interviewing at B?

I did an externship and ended up applying to 2 different programs in the same city. If I remember correctly, I was advised to apply to 4 programs for the same block of time as externships can be hard to come by. I actually was offered an externship at my number 1 choice, and as I was walking in the first day, got a call from the other program saying.. "we still haven't gotten approval from our program." I told them thank you, have a nice day and still was offered an interview at their program for residency.

Now, if you accept a position at one place, I would be cautious to cancel in leiu of another program, unless you give them PLENTY of notice. And be very respectful. It isn't bad to cancel, and lots of people do it, but be very nice in how you go about it so you dont' burn any bridges.
