Hey everyone. I sent my 4th year away applications to schools a few weeks ago and was wondering if there was a consensus about calling or emailing the program. A few of my friends (not in anesthesia) just called up programs and easily scheduled their aways. One even talked to the chair of the department directly! Others have told me that some programs are offended by this and prefer students to go about the traditional route. I have a few programs at which I would love to do an away, but am undecided about contacting them. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If they're that uptight about you contacting them by phone, you don't need to go there. Call the department and speak to the externship coordinator.

I called and left my number and email address and the next day I got a email saying my orientation package would be sent out.

Definitely call or email if they have provided the clerkship coordinator's name and contact details. If you wait until you get your full application in, you take the risk of letting someone else call/email and get a space that could have been offered to you had you caught the ball a little earlier.

I called one coordinator and she pencilled me into the month I wanted right away, then waited another two weeks to receive my paper application.

Thanks for the reply. Any individuals who have another side to the story? I suppose it would be wise to call this week, however is it too late at this point to call?

Another day has gone by and you haven't called. CALL.

Okay, okay, calling. Heh. 🙂

So I contact the school I was interested in and they tell me that they already accepted me weeks ago, and were surprised that I didn't know about it. Go figure.

Now my concern is that the few other schools that I applied to accept me and I have to decline. I would love to go to any of those schools, but I have housing at the place I wanted to go.... save some money.

Does it look bad to turn down an away offer when you are considering it for residency? Unfortunately you can't be in two places at once. Thanks again for your input everyone.

I ended up matching at the place where I had to cancel an away so, at least in my case, it wasn't that big of a deal.
