Hi I'm currently at m3 hoping to match into dermatology in Chicago. I know I can't be picky, but I'd like to maximize my chances of matching in the city. If any of you have any advice about away rotations at any of the chicago programs I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

prob don't go to NW...they already have research fellows and many rotators

has anyone rotated at rush, cook, loyola, or u of c?

Assess the relative strengths of the programs before you rotate.

Loyola is relatively new, up and coming.

Cook is struggling, supposedly, because of budget issues (correct me if I'm wrong).

U Chicago is a division, relatively weak IMHO compared to divisions at other hospitals of similar caliber.

Don't know much about Rush.

Yes, there is a County budget. Yes, that does mean that we don't get everything we want (but does any program in this country get that?). We just purchased two new lasers in the last two years - a PDL/NDYag and another for tattoo removal. We are in the process of recruiting another faculty member. We are crazy busy in clinics. We are not struggling. It's a great place to do a medical student rotation. Lots of autonomy and opportunity to work up patients on your own, do procedures, etc.

is it true that cook county gives interviews to all/most of their rotators?

agree with above poster...anyone have info on those programs?

i didn't rotate there, but i interviewed at a few of the chicago programs and of these, i thought loyola was fantastic. residents were really fun to interact with and really happy. attendings were really personable and they have a relatively large faculty for the size of the residency program. they only take 2 residents a year for the moment but they've received approval to expand to 4 a year and i believe they'll be doing this in the next year or two. i didn't know anything about loyola going into the interview, but i was really impressed -- it was one of my favorite places on the trail.

BUMP

Have any of you rotated at any of the Chicago programs within the last three years? Do you have any comments on the programs, specifically if there were too many rotating students, the program didn't offer you a courtesy invite, or if the faculty did or didn't offer to write you a LOR?

Thanks!

I rotated at two Chicago programs. I strongly agree with the above comments regarding Loyola. It was a fantastic experience. Residents and faculty are extremely personable with tons of autonomy at the VA hospital.

In addition to Loyola, I would highly recommend cook county. Tons of autonomy, friendly residents/attendings, and they usually interview all rotators. UIC is kind of hit or miss, depends on who you get to work with. I'd stay away from northwestern as they tend to have tons of rotators and research fellows. Uchicago might be worthwhile, if not only to get a firsthand experience of what the program is really like. I learned things during my rotation there that I would have not gleaned just from an interview day. I know for sure that they do NOT interview all rotators.
