I work in a trauma 1 hospital on a neurological-trauma floor as a RN. I interact with neurologists and neurosurgeons on a daily basis and I must say I was more than extremely impressed with the veterinarians I interacted with today. The passion, care, expertise and swiftness of these physicians in diagnosing and treating my four year old miniature dachshund was simply amazing. Today I woke up to find my dog not wanting to get out of her crate. She presented with a sudden onset of lower extremity paresis. She was hyperventilating, shivering, and markedly drowsy. We took her to our veterinarian and he took x-rays and did a neurological assessment. It was instantly determined she likely had a spinal cord infarct due to a clot or spinal cord compression from a tumor or herniated disk. We were referred to a 24 hour emergency care center where the surgeon performed a myelogram and an emergency hemilaminectomy. The surgeon just informed us many bone fragments were removed and her spinal cord is now flush in the vertebral column and no longer compressed. She is in the ICU and will be closely monitored for the next few days. She's getting a lot of pain medicines, IV steroids, and rest. We're going to see her tomorrow and the veterinarian believes she will make a full recovery. He said if we wouldn't have brought her in so promptly her prognosis would have been very poor. Just thought I'd post this story and how appreciative I am of the hard work you guys and girls do. 👍
