I work in a trauma 1 hospital on a neurological-trauma floor as a RN. I interact with neurologists and neurosurgeons on a daily basis and I must say I was more than extremely impressed with the veterinarians I interacted with today. The passion, care, expertise and swiftness of these physicians in diagnosing and treating my four year old miniature dachshund was simply amazing. Today I woke up to find my dog not wanting to get out of her crate. She presented with a sudden onset of lower extremity paresis. She was hyperventilating, shivering, and markedly drowsy. We took her to our veterinarian and he took x-rays and did a neurological assessment. It was instantly determined she likely had a spinal cord infarct due to a clot or spinal cord compression from a tumor or herniated disk. We were referred to a 24 hour emergency care center where the surgeon performed a myelogram and an emergency hemilaminectomy. The surgeon just informed us many bone fragments were removed and her spinal cord is now flush in the vertebral column and no longer compressed. She is in the ICU and will be closely monitored for the next few days. She's getting a lot of pain medicines, IV steroids, and rest. We're going to see her tomorrow and the veterinarian believes she will make a full recovery. He said if we wouldn't have brought her in so promptly her prognosis would have been very poor. Just thought I'd post this story and how appreciative I am of the hard work you guys and girls do. 👍

Glad you pup got some good help! You will make your vet's day if you send them a thank you note as well....

Great idea! We will definitely send them a thank you card. They are expecting her to be discharged today and she's doing great! 😀

We got her back yesterday and wow she is doing great. We have to do some mild physical therapy 3x day just moving her legs back and forth and using a sling for her back legs but she is wagging her tail and using her legs all on her own once we get her up with the sling. I have never seen such a fast and full recovery in my life in human medicine. You guys and girls do such fantastic work and you are much appreciated!

Aw, that's great! I love happy endings. Yes, with back dogs, time makes all the difference.

Animals are so amazingly tough. I can't believe how fast they bounce back sometimes.
