Excuse my ignorance but I have a question about AZ dental schools. I know of two dental schools in AZ- Midwestern and AT Still. Are both of these public school or private. My initial guess is they are both private. So for my follow up question, if my prior assumption is true, do I have a higher likelihood for Out of state schools because I don't have a "public" dental school in my state? Thanks for your vast wisdom on this SDN!

Both private. Second question kind of depends on your residency. Some schools don't care, some have agreements to take some pity on those without their own state school.

Yes, both private, as jeffity said. You won't have an advantage in the admissions game just because AZ doesn't have a public school. However, there is a program called the WICHE program, which means the state of AZ has agreements with certain schools (seen here http://www.wiche.edu/psep/dent) that they will take a certain number of AZ residents, and the state will pay a certain amount of money toward their education each year. Then at the end of dental school, they require you to practice in the state for a certain amount of time. I don't remember the details, because I researched it 4 years ago, but you can look it up.

By the way, as you know, private schools are INSANELY expensive. So if you can do it at all, go to a state school in another state where you can get in state tuition after first year. The total amount of my loans for dental school (everything - 4 years of living costs, tuition, transportation, fees, board exams) is lower than the amount that I would have had just for tuition at one of the private AZ schools. It is to your huuuuuuuuuuge advantage to limit the cost of your dental education if at all possible.

If you're an AZ resident, just fill out a residency form and apply to any of those schools on that link above that you're competitive for. You'll have more priority for getting an interview than other OOS people. But not guaranteed acceptance. If you can get the funding, great. But not everyone who applies gets it. It makes your tuition at those schools like in-state tuition if you're accepted. That's how it works. Instead of having a state school where they subsidize every student, they fund a certain amount of students each year. They value that at about $25,000 a year right now with slight increases each year.

Thanks so much for your informative replies! It's not complete clear yet but I am no longer solely in the dark. I will keep researching it
