Hello everyone!

Does anyone know how competitive programs in AZ are? I did a search and the only thing that came up was that St. Joes always had unmatched spots before the scramble. I want to end up in AZ/Nevada/Washington/Oregon/Utah/NewMexico - I passed step I on my first time (barely) and I just wanted to see where I stand. Please let me know if anyone has any input.

UofA in Tucson expanded their intern class to 15 this year, but didn't fill through the match. I did an away there and really liked the program (they have really excellent teaching faculty), but in the end felt more comfortable about about some other programs. They are opening their freestanding children's hospital in January or February of 2010, that might make them more attractive for next year's match. Their PD is awesome too. Really, I think it's a program that's about to make a big leap forward.

I think you're probably ok with your score.

U of A didn't even offer me an interview; I assume it was because I didn't take USMLE Step1 (I'm a DO), depsite getting my Master's from there and working in their campus health for 2 years. Granted, that was 4 1/2 years ago. Phx Children's is a bigger program and I'd put it in the middle category in terms of competitiveness. St. Joe's is in the lower tier in terms of competitiveness. I think it's a decent program, though. I actually liked it better than Phx Children's. I have only heard great things about the NM program, but don't have any direct interaction with them.

You can always inprove your chances by rotating at a place. And you don't necessarily have to do a SubI. I did an endo month at Phx Children's and it was awesome.
