As you can guess I am haveing a hard time choosing which school to attend one of the newest ones or the oldest. Both schools had great people and friendly staffs. Putting this aside (both felt right) can anyone give me an insight on attending these schools, or just some pro's and con's.
Thanks for the help. 😕

Hey Swaamedic,
As a member of KCOM class of 2006, I will gladly give the top 10 list of reasons to go to KCOM over AZCOM. Drumroll, please.... 🙂

10. Only four letters in the name.
9. I'll be at KCOM... think of how much fun we'll have.
8. You get to look at pictures of AT Still every day.
7. Your parents won't be bored... they can look at the museum when they come to visit.
6. You can get to know Walmart in depth.
5. All that cow-tipping to do...
4. Better name recognition.
3. You know deep down you really want to go to KCOM.
2. A longer and richer tradition.
1. You can make snow angels in the winter.

Just to add my two cents...
I grew up about an hour from Kville in Hannibal, MO..you know...Mark Twain, Huck Finn? Anyway, I went to college at Truman State, in Kirksville. So, I've been a northeast Missouri resident all my life. From a 'local' point of view, here is what I think.....If you are impressed with the school, curriculum, and all that stuff at both schools, you now need to focus on just simple living. Such as, where will you be happier? I have been really offended by classmates and by some of the upperclassmen who have claimed to come to KCOM for the great school, only to make non-stop fun of Kirksville, it's lack of culture, no good restaurants, the bad nightlife, even the towns-people. Now, I agree, it does get a bit boring at times. However, it's important to remember that there are almost 20,000 people here who call this place home.

My point is to 1. compares SCHOOLS 2. compare environment If you can handle the slower pace in Kirksville and the wonderful small-town attention KCOM has to offer for a mere two years, then that's great. However, if you want to come to KCOM, but will be miserable because the nearest microbrewery is an hour and a half away..then you need to think of things in that respect. If you have no family involved, then you may not appreciate the small-town atmosphere of Kirksville that many medical students that have children appreciate very much.

I guess I am focusing on this because you said the schools presented themselves equally to you. Consider things like cost of living, how far will your loan money go if that is your only income, how far will your commute be, and will your classmates be just a couple streets, or even a couple doors away when you need something.

Personally, I can't imagine living in a bigger town. I've always been able to get across town in 10 minutes and I value that a lot!

Good luck with your decision, and (in my completely 100% objective opinion-even though I have never set foot on AZCOM's campus), I would say choose KCOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I echo the last post only with an opposite opinion-- I have never been to kcom so i can't say much of anything pro/con about it....but i will let you know that azcom is a super choice. As far as the school's prestige and age go-- i couldn't care less. It won't matter as a DO. If it comes down to you and the next applicant for a residency i can promise you they won't ask how old your school was!!!! They'll look at your scores - azcom has 100% board pass rates for the last couple of years!!!! As well as your letters of rec written by people you met during your clinical work. Personally i love how the clinical years are set up at azcom-- preceptor mixed with hospital based, with an impressive amount of quality hospitals in the area-- ie:MAYO!!
You are in a win-win situation. Both schools will get you where you need to go- it all comes down to you and what you want. If you like small towns and having to move around to do your clinical stuff-- great! If you want more city-like conditions and the option of settling down for a few years- super!! I really like the idea of attending a school that has proven it can prepare you for the boards, get you where you want to go, provide wonderful clinical experiences-- and being able to where shorts and flip-flops to class every single day of the year!! Cada loco con el suyo!!!

My own personal opinion....

I was accepted to both AZCOM and KCOM. Although impressed with the curriculum at KCOM, I just didn't feel like it was the place for me. I don't know what it is, but it just felt kind of "cultish" there. I can't really explain it. Anyways, their school was nice but I just felt weird about the place. I also didn't like Kirksville. My two cents....

As far as AZCOM, it gave me the best feeling in comparison to all of the other schools I visited. I could see myself there, and I left AZCOM very impressed with their medical school.
As far as the new/old issue, that was a non-factor for me. You will receive excellent training no matter where you go, you just have to decide where you will feel most comfortable.

It's all about personal opinion. There's mine.

Good luck in your decision! Congratulations on even having this dilemma  !

Congratulations on both of your acceptances!

Like you, three years ago I had multiple acceptances to deal with and I choose AZCOM and have not regretted one minute of my decision 😀

Not only is our school one of the newest premier universities within the Osteopathic community, the Phoenix metroplex has so much to offer. An example...I am preparing for boards now and needed a stress reliever. Last night I went to Round 1/Game 1 of the NHL Playoffs!!! Too bad the Coyotes lost-but it was a blast nontheless, thanks to AZCOM and their great discount ticket bargains!!!

As you may already know from your research, AZCOM has an exemplary student body and our board scores and residency placements just add credence to my claims. KCOM is a great school as well, and for the traditionalist who enjoys a small town atmosphere, it would be a wonderful place to begin your career. For each of us, when making life altering decisions we must search within ourselves and be painfully honest with ourselves in the process. Only you can decide what is best for you.

BTW Phoenix has many KCOM students rotating here during their third and fourth years. You may want to hunt a few down and get their opinions concerning the pro and con of both communities. Good luck in your decision process.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions. But for now I must get back to my studies so I can keep up the new and exciting tradition of AZCOM "smokin' the boards!!!" 😀
