azcom vs western for california practice

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
True Gunner in Me: Nope, AZCOM won't help you out in anyway. Just go for Western.

The Real Story: AZCOM allows you to do clinical rotations in Los Angeles for 3rd and 4th year. I believe this would be great for future practice in California. It really depends more on your scores, gpa, LORs etc for residency here in CA than what school you went to.

Staying in CA is why Western and AZCOM are my top choices 😀

Sure, but you have to look at where AZCOM places you within California. Just being put in the LA area doesn't mean your facility will give you a quality experience. Ask critical questions if you have an interview offer at either school.

TBH, some acgme residency programs don't even know about Western specifically (let alone AZCOM); they just know of Western as "that DO school in Pomona." The advantage of AZCOM and Western comes from geographic location - it's logistically easier to set up away rotations at the CA residency programs you're likely to be interested in. As far as AOA residencies go, having required rotations through Western's clinical sites puts you at an advantage when applying to the OPTI-West AOA residency consortium within CA.

I'll also throw in the fact that in addition to LA, AZCOM offers rotations in Turlock/Modesto and is gradually expanding MWU-associated residencies in the Turlock/Modesto region (ex: a new ortho program was recently approved and starts in 2013 I believe).

I have seen the post listing the hospitals that AZCOM students can rotate at in LA. They were pretty big hospitals from what I knew and researched. However, there was no discussion of the quality of the rotations at those hospitals. Could you comment on the hospitals, what other students liked and didn't like about them?

I'm not of much help there as I'm only a rising MSII and don't know anybody rotating there yet, but when we were going through our lottery we talked with a regional liaison and the general consensus for all of the California rotations was that students were happy with their experiences (the ones on the Modesto region in particular sounded like they had preceptors who were very excited to have them).
