I'm wait-listed at USC Keck and waiting to hear back regarding II's from UC Irvine, Emory, Stanford, UCLA, and Tufts, all of which I know are extremely unlikely to get II's at this point (or ever). So I'm wondering if anyone has any idea of how I can make my chances better for USC (they unrecepetive to updates/additional letters of rec, etc) or how many people they've taken off the wait-list in past years? I've done some research on this and no one seems to know, but I thought I'd put it out there anyway. Or anything I can do to get last minute II's at these schools (UCI or Tufts maybe)?
If I do have to reapply come June I plan to broaden my school list of course (I only applied to 20 schools this cycle) and apply to less competitive programs. I'm worried I didn't add to my application enough this year, because I assumed I would get in somewhere. This year I accumulated ~100 additional hours of physician shadowing (I only had ~30 on my AMCAS) and a letter of rec from one of the physicians. I worked as a hostess at a restaurant ~25 hrs/week for a while and then got a full time job as a front-desk receptionist at a hospital. And recently volunteering in a nursing home, working with Dementia patients. Any advice on last minute activities I can do, or do you think this enough change if I continue the working/volunteering? I think the weak point in my application may have been clinical experience?
Stats by the way:
cGPA/sGPA: > 3.9
MCAT: 35 (well balanced)
EC's from previous AMCAS
- <100 combined shadowing/hospital volunteering when submitting AMCAS
- 1 year research when AMCAS submitted
- 2 years tutoring
- small amount of non-clinical volunteering...
I couldnt help but chime in on this. Its pretty unfortunate if you not sitting on an acceptance this season but I do agree that you need to work on your ECs. Typically I would advise you to seek research and clinical volunteering experience. Tutoring is good to have but you might wanna volunteer in selective places that look good on your application. At the same time also pitch in time for non-clinical volunteering. And lastly, apply broadly...you can always withdraw once you have options. But with your scores, if you do it right, I would be surprised the good schools dont lap you up. The next season is around the corner and you might wanna re-evaluate your ECs big time..I feel thats what held you back. You could share your details with someone who has gone through this cycle for better advise before its too late for the next cycle. But honestly, I do hope you get something this year too. Clinical experience you getting is good but you would need to highlight this and include it as apart of your primary/secondary..try leveraging this ( I hope you understand). May not be a bad ides to seek out opportunities to work elsewhere too ..free clinics etc helping care for diverse population. Will also help add more hours to your effort.Thank you for chiming in! So as far a clinical volunteer experience--I'm volunteering in a nursing home now with dementia patients. Does that count? And research..I work at a medical center and may be able to volunteer on a research project with one of our docs here + shadow (hopefully). Non-clinical volunteering...hmmm, I'll have to look into that more.
I'm defintely planning on applying more broadly. I applied to very competitive schools this cycle. I think that and my EC's were a mistake. I also suspect I may have a so-so letter of rec, which I will take out of my app next time.
