Hello

I graduated from a state university with BA in English couple years ago and I just decided I want to go to a pharmacy school.

I am thinking about taking pharmacy pre-requisites from a community college for cost saving. My husband, who's a pharmacist, told me it should be fine to take pre-requisites from a CC since I already have a bachelor's degree but I am worried that pre-requisites from a CC might have influence on the addmission.

Would pre-requisites from a CC be enough or do you think I should take credits from a 4 year college?

What schools were you planning on applying to?

Univ of Illinois or any pharmacy schools in the mid-west and Texas.. I don't have specific plans of schools I want to apply to yet..but what schools are generous about credits from a community college?

The best thing to do is to contact each school you are interested in and ask specifically.

Generally speaking, with a 4 year degree, CC pre-requisites are OK because you have proven that you can handle upper division coursework at some point in your college career. Some schools are prejudiced against CC work of course, as you know, and the only reliable way of discerning which schools do and don't is to contact your prospective schools.

You'll likely also have to take the PCAT, which you can use to say, "look, I got a XX %tile on the PCAT, so regardless of where my pre-requisites were taken, I know what I'm doing."

Good luck!

It doesn't matter whether you take your prereqs. If your school requires PCAT for admission, then make sure you do brilliantly on those and you'll be fine.

This is what I've done so far and it hasn't held me back at all. You just have to work to get the grades and retain the information....the same as at any school, community college or university.

There are a few classes I've had to take through the university that aren't offered by the CC at the appropriate level (300 or above), though. For some schools, these classes include biochemistry and/or physiology and/or genetics.

I agree! While I did get my Bachelors at a university, I did so as a community college transfer after doing 3 years of GE & lower division major classes. That being the case I ended up finishing ~85% of my pre-reqs at different community colleges & the rest at university. I got a couple interviews at great schools but not a lot. So far i've been accepted into 1 great & established pharm program and luckily it was my #1 choice.

so moral of the story, having a chunk of your academic resume come from CC coursework isn't exactly a deal breaker. just make sure to research & contact the programs you are interested in to know what they are looking for in their program candidates.
