Hello there all,

Ive been hovering around the dental forums for a few days, and found it very helpful in aiding my decision. This is my second post here, and i have a few questions. I am 23 years old and currently a JUNIOR at UCSD studying Engineering, however i'm considering a major transition out of Engineering. I ran into a gal at ucsd that was in their dental society or something, spoke to her and she breifly told me about her aspirations and expecations of becoming a dentist, what she said made me reconsider my career in life. A few days later i woke up and realized that I do not want to crunch numbers for the rest of my life, nor would i want to work under a boss for the rest of my life. unless I opened up a engineering facility which i doubt due to lack of capital. I am eager and willing to compromise a few more years of my life to study in something so exclusive that at the end will be self satisfying not to myself but to the community and to my family. My question is should i graduate with the bs in engineering, or should i ditch now and run with the credits ive arleady earned and start studying for the DAT, to ultimlatey apply to Dental school. Do you need a B.S. to get into dental school? Any helpful insights would be great.
thanks in advance. 😀 😉

Nope, you could get in with a BA in Art or Music as long as you've completed all of your prereqs for dental school.

You dont even have to have a Bachelor's degree. I almost didn't get mine and none of the school's that accepted told me I had to have it. But it certainly doesn't hurt you to have one either.

Congratulations, although you are in a select minority. Most schools do want you to have some sort of degree - whether it be a B.S., B.A., of B.F.A and this is evident in the matriculation numbers. Yes, it is true, you can major in anything and some schools see an non-science background as a real positive.

Schools "wanting you to have some sort of degree" and "requiring'" a degree are two separate situatioins. I believe it is simply a trend that most "competitive" applicants admitted to dental schools have completed their degree. My opinion, for what it is worth: Engineering is a challenging program and ad comms will consider it as such. Don't worry about completing your degree as much a laying a solid foundation for professional studies (basic requirements and a few upper-division biology courses - definitely biochemistry!) and solidly preparing for a successful DAT attempt. You are on a good path!!! 👍

Over 98% of applicants holding degrees seems to be more than a trend. Sooner than later schools will be requiring degrees, in my opinion.
