Hello everyone, Long time lurker, first time poster. I was wondering if you think it is ridiculous to get a bachelors. Currently, my major is History, and I have been slowly doing the pre-reqs for pharmacy school, because I really want my bachelors, but here recently I have been hearing I am dumb for trying to get it, because it is un needed. What do y'all think?

Not stupid. Bachelors=good thing to have. I will get my bachelor's before entry into pharmacy school. Do people really hate school that much. I know it's expensive..I know a lot of us it seems like we don't have a penny to our name either, but it's worth it in the long run.

The general line of thinking of not getting a bachelor's is: I don't have to have one to get into pharmacy school...some schools let you complete it while you're in pharm school. However, I would definitely point out two things: You won't have another extra headache while you're in pharm school, and you might be able to get into pharm school easier. Besides, some schools do require them.

The question is: How much do you enjoy undergrad? Do you really want to rush through it? Another 10-25K/yr isn't going to matter much if you're making 70-80K+ after graduation from pharm school. 😳

It's always good to have something else to fall back on.. but if you're absolutely sure about pharmacy, it may not be necessary to have a non-traditional bachelors before pharmacy school. If it were a chemistry, biology or microbiology bachelors than I would certainly suggest going for it... because you'll develop a general base of knowledge for many of the courses in your first and second year. You'll be more academically mature and develop a stronger study ethic due to the more difficult courses as compared to just the prereq sciences. This may apply to your history degree (I'm clueless as to what a history degree entails), and if that's true than perhaps it is worth it simply for the self discipline. Just remember though, each extra year you spend towards your history degree... you're missing out on another 100k in 4 years. 😉 Also, you can always continue your history degree during your pharmacy school summers or after you graduate.

If your stats are high enough (gpa, pcat) and are well rounded, you probably shouldn't waste your time with the BA. But note, more and more schools are heavily favoring applicants with a bachelors.

For many schools, especially in CA, almost 100% of accepted applicants have a bachelors. For schools like UCSD, for sure 100% of the matriculating class had a BA/BS for past few years.

I am speaking only from the view of being a competitive applicant. Whether you should or shouldn't for your own knowledge and background is a personal choice.

I would say if you want to apply to one or two schools (limiting your application related expenses like transcripts, supp apps, pharmcas fees etc) before you get your BA/BS then go ahead and apply without it. If you find it's reasonably difficult to get in without it, you haven't lost much, just a few hundred $$. Surely it's less than the few $K that you'd save if you get in before paying the extra tuition required for the BA/BS.

what would be dumb is if you dont get it and don't get in. The majority of accepted students to pharmacy schools now have a bachelors. If you want to be competitive then yes, do it. Many schools are now requiring more prereqs. I think a degree will be common in the next few years as more students apply to pharmacy school.

Totally true. In a few years Pharm school will be as competitive as Med School, requiring a Bachelors to be even considered.
