Hi Dents,

I am currently a dental hygiene student and it is a great introduction into dentistry. Many people aren't familiar with what dental hygienists do but our scope of practice is pretty impressing. We are able to do scaling and root planing (which means PRODUCTION for dentists), place sealants, oral hygiene instruction, anesthesia, nitrous sedation, etc. The biggest thing we AREN'T able to do is restorative work (except in Washington). Otherwise, it is a great profession.

I got my BS 5 years ago and many DH programs require your prerequisites be completed within 5 years of applying. Typical prerequisites are: anatomy(with a lab), physiology(with a lab), chemistry (with lab, usually intro to chem -2 semesters), microbiology(with a lab), nutrition and GEs.

I hope this helped. Hygiene is a great field, the money is good and the work is interesting.
