Do applicants of the early match for Ophtho generally use the regular match as a backup for Ophtho, like in a different field? Is this a wise choice, and can Ophtho residencies find out that the applicant is not commited to Ophtho? Any ideas on this would be helpful

I didn't, but I know that other people use the NRMP as back up (ie. medicine). I don't see how ophtho programs would be able to access this info esp since it is through a different distribution system. They might ask you on your interview though. I was frequently asked during interviews where else I applied. I think it is a wise choice if you are not confident about matching in ophtho and you would rather join another specialty than not match for that year.

Maculastar, congrats on your matching dude! I'm not sure if anybody knows this- if I match into PGY1 and go unmatched into categorical Ophthalmology, is it advisable to accept PGY1 and to reapply into categorical Ophthal next year? Or just let it go, and apply for both PGY1 and categorical Ophth again next year? I'm speaking strategically, because I'm IMG with visa issues. What happens if you go unmatched again after completing your PGY1? I don't have any back up plan.
