Hello,

I'm currently a medical student and recently met a current OMFS resident at my home program (6 year combined). I told him I had some interest in OMFS and he said he knew of a few programs that go in the reverse order, that is MD first, than DDS (or DMD). However, I got no names from him.

I was wondering if anyone knew of such programs and/or how I could find out more about them.

Yes, I know it is a dental specialty, but i'd like to look into it a bit further.

Thanks

UAB does for sure but it ends up being a little longer route

one program (UT San Antonio) did have one med student get an omfs...but he or she went through dental school and probably a few years on omfs...but i don't know how long ago that was and don't really know the nature of how that was handled...i know it was a med student already enrolled at UT...i would talk to the program director at your institution...so good luck...nice to see med students seeing the light...j/k...hahahahaha

I know Michigan has 1 student who did med school, then 1 year of general surgery, now he is doing 3 years of dental school, then 3 years of the 6 year OMFS program (only 3 since he did med school and surgery already). It will take him 11 years total instead of 10 if he did dental school first, but he will be happy and is glad he did it.

To the OP: I wish you luck in what you are pursuing. To be fair to yourself, what is it about OMS that interests you? And, could those interests not be fulfilled in another surgical specialty? What about ENT?

I don't know why you even bothered posting this. Why would you assume that, as a medical student, he wouldn't already be considering or have considered ENT? Sure, in academic settings, there is a lot of overlap. For the most part, in the private sector the two have a totally different focus. I like the aspects of ENT that overlap OMFS, but I'm not at all interested in tubes and tonsils. You sound like you're trying to talk him out of considering OMFS, not answer his question.

You have a lot of good advice to give, but I don't think this is a topic about which you are qualified to offer suggestions.

My interest is mainly in the fact that my dad is a dentist, and i'd like to entertain the possibility of one day becoming incorporated into his practice.

I'm just throwing some ideas out there. By no means am I set in my path at this point.

Thanks

It is a problem that is difficult. I had a friend that wanted to do the same thing and he ended up having to go back and do dental school first. The ADA now says you cannot be accepted into an OMS residency before you have your DMD/DDS. That makes the whole process a lot more difficult to do reverse track OMS. Plus most dental schools will require that you take most, if not all, of the education which means a likely 4 years. Unless you are certain that you would love OMS I wouldn't do it.

Well, your friend can go straight for Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery MD or Head and Neck Surgery MD,=(which is a combination of Plastic Surgeon and ENT).
Oregon State University has a great program in HNS.Good luck 👍

Wow! When did that change?

Dunno, but that was what Startzell down at San Antonio was telling me. My buddy that is trying to do it this way was having issues in that the program couldn't actually accept him until he was a dentist and Startzell said it was a new rule. He is a pretty by-the-book kindof guy and I trust him on these matters. I think anybody wanting to do MD>>>Oms is going to have trouble.

One of our faculty members told me the same thing. That the ADA does not want Md's to go into oral surgery.
It is a dental specialty afterall. We dont get our dental degree and apply for a combined MD Dermatology program.
