I volunteer with a OB/GYN nurse practitioner. Would it be bad for her to write me a letter of recommendation for med school since she's a nurse? Thanks!
I'm not an expert on letters or anything, but I don't see anything wrong with a letter from an RNP. If she knows you well and can write a good a letter about you I would say go for it. If I knew a nurse well I wouldn't hesitate to ask for one from them, they have just as good an insight into medicine as physicians.
I don't see that as a problem at all. As long as she comments on your communication/patient-interaction/human skills and commitement as a volunteer, I think this would be a great recommendation. I think this would be better than getting a rec from a doctor whom you barely know and who barely knows you!
Anyone who knows you really well and has good things to say about you is a great start. If that person is in the medical profession, even better. Of my 4 letters, 2 were college professors, 1 a Doc, and 1 a high school teacher. And that teacher was the only one that I knew I wanted on my list of recommenders before I started applying.

Of course it's not a BAD idea - I concur with all the other respondants and want to add that it's good to have a LOR from at least one person who really knows what it's like to live and work as a physician (i.e. a physician 🙂, but the most important letters are going to come from people who can say things like you will do your school, and the public in general, a great disservice by not admitting and training this person to become a physician, yadda yadda yadda
