Bad idea to put this as an EC?

I have been involved in marketing and advertising (volunteer) for a contemporary musical theater company that prominently features burlesque and whose shows would seem vulgar to someone highly conservative. Would it be a bad idea to add this to the ECs? Should I just not mention it at all? I have all the "typical" premed ECs as well. Thanks for the Advice!

Unless the organization name is something like, "SleezyRUs" I don't see why you can't soften your description and obscure the earthy qualities that might take aback overly-conservative adcomms.

I'd be more concerned as to why this was "volunteering." This doesn't sound like you were helping a non-profit organization. It sounds like you were taken advantage of for free labor, or you did it for other unknown reasons. I think ADCOMs may be curious about this.

When I was in undergrad, some fellow classmates were willing to work for free to get their foot in the door in fields like investment banking. Even though they were working for free, they weren't "volunteers."

If you add this, I would not mention it was "volunteering" or free labor. I would say you did marketing and advertising with no mention of compensation. Also leave out burlesque if possible.

Many theatre companies are non-profit and they operate on shoe-string budgets. Volunteers who give their time to promote the arts are highly valued by those organizations. As @Catalystik says, if you can gloss over the earthy nature of the shows, this would be a fine item to add to the experience section and makes you a bit less "cookie cutter".

Full disclosure: Someone in my family does volunteer work in marketing and promotion for a dance company.

Thanks for clarifying, I didn't know that! 🙂

Use the "contemporary musical theater company" phrase and probably leave out "burlesque." Remember you don't have very much space to describe the activity, and you want to use most of the space to describe 1) what you did and 2) what you learned from it. There's usually no need to go into detail about the actual organization (this goes for most activities that are relatively self-explanatory).

Something like,

"As a marketing and advertising volunteer for a local contemporary musical theater company, I was responsible for X, Y, and Z. This taught me how to A, B, C, blah blah blah"

There you go. Golden.

I appreciate the feedback! The company actually has "burlesque" in the title, but I think my description can make it clear this was in support of the arts.

Definitely novel! You'll be fine to list it. You're not applying to LUCOM or Lioma Linda, are you?
