Is it a bad idea to double major? I'm thinking about majoring in public health but double majoring in business communications as a plan b. Is this too risky?

So long as you can handle it, then no. Plus, it's not like you're majoring in chemical engineering and biochemistry....

There are usually plenty of hours in undergrad to fit in a double major and your prereqs...a double major won't help you with med school admission but it might help you with your plan B.

It's always good to have a solid plan B so if this path interest you go for it.

Thank you for your response. Nothing near that lol

I'm just thinking that if I have to go with a plan b the business communications degree can help further my career with my current employer.

Why public health? Yuck.

I THOUGHT I was interested in it during undergrad, until I saw first hand the ridiculousness of some of the things being studied (masturbation and sun screen usage: the implications of orgasm and skin cancer; sarcasm) and the ignorance of PH-crazies: "Well, people want to eat healthy, they just can't recognize healthy foods". Geeze.

Sounds like you've got a parochial understanding of the world, and how others perceive it. Not everyone grew up with the resources you did, which includes parents that have an understanding of what is and isn't healthy, what calories are, etc. Get off your high horse.

Oh boy we have a sjw over here who gets high from the smell that eminates from his/her rear-end. Adults know which foods are healthy. And to be healthy you need to have an understanding of what a calorie is? I have a friend who plays hockey in the NHL and he wouldn't even be able to give you an elementary definition. Education only goes so far, my friend...and it's useless without receptivity.

Also, grew up poor and in foster care. Please tell me more about what "people like me"understand and make sure to reference your PH textbook. Learn to have a sense of humor. That's the problem with PH-crazies though, you read your textbooks and think you know something about the world and the underserved/underprivileged. In reality, you're just judgmental elitists who like to talk down to those who are less educated or those who disagree with your points of view.

Great GRE score by the way. Here is some txt completion review. Get the _____ out of your ___.

Glad to hear about your idiot friend, but n=1, in case you weren't taught that in the Caribbean. Elitist? I grew up poor, with a mother that didn't graduate HS, and a father that spoke broken English, so don't get it twisted, numb nuts. PH crazies? First, I'm a molecular biology major, not PH. Second, it's those PH crazies that have pioneered a lot of policy and research initiatives that have saved countless lives. Your rhetoric is pretty concerning for a future physician. God help your patients, because it doesn't appear like you'll give a rats ass about them. Scary to know you'll be a future colleague. Shivers.

Judgmental, my oh my. Idiot...Carribean (elitist comment)...numb nuts. Very mature. I can't wait to have you as a "colleague" (another elitist comment). What a hypocrite. Touchy when a nerve is struck, eh? Let's hope all of your patients are easy going. You are too sensitive and volatile (and way too quick to jump to name calling. Let's hope all of your patients agree with you).

Oh and your GRE score on sdn...way to seek validation. PH crazies would say that mommy probably didn't hug you enough. and it shows how shaky you really are since you deleted it. Wow, will you change your actions/advice every time a patient challenges you?

I do care, I just don't live in a fantasy land where I see an obese patient and think, "OMG, she must not know what a calorie is or that a banana is healthier than a sleeve of oreos!'I'll go 'educate' her and save her life". I give people more credit and respect than that. Good luck having a career telling people how much they don't know...people love that!

And I'm not talking about pragmatic PH, I'm talking about PH-crazies. My wife has an MPH and my sentiments mimic hers to a tee. Wait until you are out in the field...

The only risk is your ability to handle course loads. That doesn't sound like an unreasonable double major at all though, but I don't know how many credits each requires or if you'd need to do summer courses. It's possible there's overlap between them which would be nice.

Good luck!

You either lack self-awareness or are incredibly hypocritical, either way, you need help. I only responded with ad hominems because you decided to stoop that low, "SJW," "high from the smell that emanates from his/her rear," etcetera. Check yourself.

Seek validation? I had them posted to help others currently in the process of applying. Nice to see you assume the worst of intentions in people, great trait to have as an attendee.

You and your wife, I assume, apparently both lack a true understanding of how scientifically illiterate and health ignorant the general public is. I agree with you on not underplaying the agency of individuals, but I think you're either over stating it's role in health cognizance or aren't considerate of other factors.

Work hard and you'll be fine. Sounds like two interesting majors!

It doesn't help nor hurt your app. Adcoms don't care what your major, minor is, nor if you double major. On second thought, taking a double major in, say, Music might get some attention.

Is it a bad idea to double major? I'm thinking about majoring in public health but double majoring in business communications as a plan b. Is this too risky?

Do you truly enjoy these two fields? then go for it !

Also, does 2 majors make you graduate a year later, assuming you took a medium/moderate courseload each semester/quarter?

I am pretty sure I would graduate on time and the double major would be a fall back plan. It's also something that could help me in a career as a physician in my opinion.
