At my last interview the interviewer asked me where i had already interviewed. I stuck with the truth (2 lower ranked schools), but I am not sure I am not sure I did the right thing?

Do you think it will hurt my chances? (it was an out of state university)

I've been asked that at pretty much every interview I've been to so far, and I told them I did receive interviews else where. I don't think its a big deal. After all, if your interviewing this early that means your pretty competitive. Admissions committee people are not stupid, they know and expect competitve students to get interviews else where. Besides, the fact that you travelled a billion miles and skipped classes just to attend their interviews probably convinced them that you are seriously considering their school

I didn't like it when they asked this question, but I answered anyway. I felt it was better to tell them than to seem in any way confrontational over something so trivial.

I really think it depends on the situation. You just have to try to read the interviewer. Frankly, you can lie your pants off and they'd never know the difference. It would serve them right for asking this (I think) inappropriate question. There will be some interviewers who really want to hear that (blank school) is really the only place for you, and then there will be those who will be impressed if you rattle off a bunch of names. I can't really think of a good reason for asking this question, though.

Why would you lie? Everyone interviews at more than one school unless they are not very competitive. I'd rather the school know that I am competitive enough to get other interviews than lie and let them think they are the only school that invited me. Plus it would be stupid to place all your eggs in one basket and interivew at only one school when you received multiple invites and they would realize this as well.

I think the problem with that is that if you inteviewed at a high tier school (assuming te school asking you is not) then they would feel that they are just your back-up school and that the chances of you actually accepting their offer are low. Hence they may be tempted to offer that spot to someone who really wants to be there badly.
any thoughts?

You all made good points. Thanks for the reassurance!

Only time could tell. However, if you interviewed at your state school (assuming that the school's stat is WAY lower than yours) I would lie where I have interviewed. I would tell them that I did interviewed but not at some high ranked school rather at schools like temple, st.louis. This so that the committee wouldn't feel that they wasted an acceptance on you fearing that you would reject them anyway after an acceptance to some ranked schools.

Yeah, my feeling is that when they ask this question (this early in the season) its because they are trying to get a feel of what types of schools you are interested in attending. Obviously, if you are interviewing this early-they know you're the shiznit, so you don't have to worry about appearing inadequate.

Funstuff - I don't think it matters either way this early on. They know you will get a bunch of more interviews. If you really liked that school and were interested in them-I'm sure you found a way to let them know that.
