Assuming we end up there. Family of four with two small children, wouldnt mind renting. What parts of the city are clean, accessible, and safe...if such a thing exists.

In Baltimore, accessibility is a very relative thing that depends on where you're working. Should I assume hopkins? Or Maryland? Somewhere else?

Since you have two small kids, I'll assume that you'd rather live in a more suburban place then in the downtown area. If you're going to hopkins, you'll want to live somewhere that's off of I-83. So look into areas like mt washington, timonium, towson, etc. You'll want to avoid having to commute on the beltway if you can, but a short distance on it won't kill you.

If you're going to univ of maryland, look into the areas off of I-95 (esp the areas south of the city).

Is there a way to get around the city easily w/mass transit?

Other than bus, not really. I spent a summer there, and you pretty much need a car to get around.

You'll need a car unfortunately. The light rail is way too slow for commuting. There is a metro that might actually stop at hopkins, but I've never used it b/c it hardly goes anywhere (and isn't safe).

Towson & Mt. Washington are definitely good places to live. You could also consider Laurel. It's about 20 minutes away by car, but it's much nicer than Baltimore.

You realllly should avoid public transportation. If you are going to be at Hopkins, the Hopkins shuttles are convenient and safe. They go back and forth between Charles Village, Peabody, Hopkins Hospital etc. So it'd be a good idea to live along the shuttle route if you're going to hopkins (that way you don't have to buy a car). Other than that, public transportation in baltimroe is scary.

As an intern the Hopkins shuttle might not work because I think it stops running at midnight (at least it used to when I was an undergrad there). If you need to work later than that you will be stuck. The public transit lines are not scary so much as limited to busses and chronically late. It's really no worse than the NYC subway. Unfortunately I think you would need to suck it up and get a car.

Oh good point. You're right. The shuttle stops at 11:30pm or 12.

If you want to live in the city, the Bolton Hill neighbourhood is worthwhile to look at. It is a fairly narrow enclave of nice streets around the Park Ave, West Lafayette intersection (near Mt Vernon and MICA). Many of the people living there work for one of the universities or colleges in town. By car it is 10 min to the Hopkins medical campus. No shopping.

Anyone have an opinion on the White Marsh or Perry Hall areas. Will be making the trek every morning into Hopkins. Have a family and defiantely want a house. Also considering north in Harford County. Any opinions??

xampower, are you going to be doing an internship at hopkins? if that is the case, you will avoid rush hour traffic and it is no big deal. however, housing around here is ridiculously expensive, especially in white marsh. i rent in the towson/timonium area, and i commute to hopkins on a daily basis down I-83 with no problem. if you ever have to commute during rush hour, just avoid living in an area where you have to drive on 95 or 695 extensively.

I will be doing anesthesia. Doing a prelim year elsewhere. I have realized that the market is expensive. Coming from South Florida it won't be much of a change for us. We have been looking in the Harford county area b/c you can get a little more bang for the buck. It would be a drive down 95 but anesthesia starts early. I doubt there is much traffic on 95 at 5:30am. What is the commute time from Timmonium??

timonium should be a 15-20 commute from downtown baltimore depending on traffic. the timonium and towson areas are pretty nice. someone mentioned laurel. laurel is nice but i drove through there not too long ago and i thought it had gotten a little worse (but PG county is a dump...trust me, I lived there for many years). columbia is pretty nice (it's montgomery county which is much much better!)

the problem with columbia and laurel is that you have to travel on I-95N to get to baltimore. that's not so bad early in the mornings when you'll have to start work but then you have to travel on pratt st. eventually when you get off the exit. that road gets clogged big time.

Travel to columbia is via 95 SOUTH and I have been told many times that the traffic is bad. However I am looking on the north side of Baltimore. How is traffic heading north on 95?

Actually Columbia is in Howard County and has pretty good schools ( for the kids) . Area housing is pretty pricey, but considering that it is a suburb of both D.C. and Baltimore investing in real estate there is not a bad idea.

95N gets prety bad during afternoon rush hour, particularly south of the 895-95 and 695-95 merge. north of that... some crowding in white marsh is usually typical. in between hopkins bayview (eastern ave exit) and the 695-95 merge expect a parking lot from about 5-ish till 6-ish.

if you're dead set on suburbia - both timonium/towson and perry hall/white marsh are nice areas. as far as harford county - a classmate of mine commutes to and fro bel air to UMB, about 45 mins each way. Hopkins will be closer b/c you wouldn't need to use the tunnel. bel air is nice, you may even be able to find something in the falston area or east of 95 that would be a few exits closer than bel air. good luck.

I was talking about going to baltimore FROM columbia. in the mornings, the traffic to baltimore can be bad (but if you're getting to the hospital by 6 am, it's not bad at all during that hour). In the evenings, the traffic from baltimore to columbia is bad.
