👍👍 Okay, So I interviewed today at Barry and I would like to address a few things. First I would like to say how AWESOME the school really is. I can’t think of the slightest idea why sooo many students get on sdn & bash Barry as hard as they do. Serously, who does that?? My best guess would be that these students who are looking down on Barry either didn’t get accepted, matriculated and couldn't follow thru with the program because of academic reasons, just do not like Miami, have NEVER even attended Barry, etc, ect.. I just would like to clear up these things because after reading all the comments (which is basically bull) on sdn, I almost didn’t even apply to the school..let a long attend the interview that I was invited to.

Anyway, I am sooo happy I didn’t let the negativity from sdn persuade me to turn away from Barry because I would have been missing out on a wonderful opportunity & a great school. As for prospective students, my opinion is to def apply to Barry. It has a great campus/clinics & hospitals/labs/up-to-date technology/professors & most of all its in MIAMI!! (who wouldn’t wanna live there)

Therefore, if anyone have any questions about Barry or the interview process during or before applying, you can send me a PM and I would be glad to answer any of your questions. Also the admissions director of Barry, Amy Rodriguez is extremely AWESOME so you can contact the school (& NOT sdn) for any detailed questions!!

What exactly did you address in that post Amy?

1st off, I never said I was Amy..& this post evidently was NOT for you. I was bascially targeting pre-podiatry students (those who are still researching & applying to schools). It was not meant for you to read and reply with such a smart comment. I didnt post the thread to argue of start a war with any1..Instead my intentions were to let PRE-podiatry students know that the other threads on sdn about Barry aren't the real deal & that Barry isn't a bad school at all. If that answers you question..Mr./Ms.smarty pants!!

I interviewed at Barry, and i thought it was a decent school. Not the best school (for me) but a decent one.

This sounds pretty fake. Anways OP, wait til you actually attend the school and take some classes until you form your official opinion.

I never said Barry was the BEST school (It would seriousy be a huge lie if I were to make that statement.. especially since I have never attended all the POD schools). The only person who can say what school is the BEST school would have to be some1 who has actually been a student at all 9 schools (which is NO-ONE). I also never made an official opinion about the school because as you stated I haven't taken classes there yet etc, etc.

Im not even sure if I will get into Barry nor will I even accept the offer if I do get in. I only interviewed there but, That was not the point of the thread. As I stated earlier. My first impression of the school is that it is a really good school and that people shouldn't look down on the school because of what a few sdn-ers are saying about a school that they haven't even attended. I just think each applicant should get out there and experience the school for themselves!!

you know things are pretty slow in the pre-pod forum when a thread like this has the most activity

You sir/madam are a bright cookie. Don't let anyone on SDN say you're cortically subillumitaed, because clearly you are not.

It's been a while since I heard that phrase, although it was spelled wrong, it was a great attempt at sarcasm. I would actually have to agree with the OP on this one. I felt the same way 2 years ago.

It's all about finding the school that's the best fit for you... I hope every pre-health student feels that way about a program. Barry is a very nice campus, gives good scholarships to offset cost of living, and has absolutely great clinics. It can definitely give you what you need like you apply yourself.

It's great that you are excited and motivated, but that has to turn into dedication over 4yrs (trust me, motivation will fade fairly fast after struggle get you through some late study nights circa the first semester midterms).

i know one, we call him the legendary, and he says even Ohio is better than Barry

I think many of the opinions on SDN tend to reflect academics (ie board score pass rates) and things of that nature. Something to look at is a schools "first time" board pass rate. Another thing to look at is match rates for residency but this isn't particularly helpful to pre-pods because I believe it more important as to WHERE they are matching (good programs, bad programs, etc) and I wouldn't expect a pre-pod to be up on that. Although with the residency shortage, it may be a bit more useful. One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to talk to 4th years from the different schools. I find that the first/second years are fiercely loyal to their schools and even into the third year. When they go out their 4th year and start rotating with students from other programs and either a) feel very well prepared or b) start seeing that they may have been shafted, they become much more realistic.

I'll be the first to admit that you definitely see trends from the different schools as they rotate through your program. But just when you think a school is completely worthless, you get a really good student from the school. So, I would say that their are trends but no absolutes. A top notch student will be a top notch student regardless of where they go.

The difference between all schools usually lies in the caliber of students in the bottom 25-30% of each class. We'll get students at the bottom of their class from some schools that are still very good. We'll get bottom feeders from other schools and lets just say it's hard to believe that they can breath and still do something else at the same time!

Well said ^^

OK... so I really do have actual questions about Barry, as want to go either there, NYCPM, or Philly and am having THE HARDEST time choosing! What are the facilities like there... nice or run down? Does everyone life off campus? Is it connected to the undergrad campus? Do they take classes with the PA school? I think that this school is the only one of the three that is year round... I can't decide if I like/hate that...

The facilities are nice..They are average but not run down at all..They also have several new facilities as of now and will continue to remodel until the new class begins in 2010. So there will be major changes in August. Only UIndergrad students are able to live on campus. Every1 else have apartments/ect. The Pod school is connected to several parts of the undergrad campus. The only classes that are taken with the PA students are classes like gross anatomy/lab & histology. The first year its only 2 semesters fall & spring..2nd -4th year its fall, spring, & summer.Hope this helps!!

Hey! I was just wondering if current Barry students could either PM me or post here the pros and cons of attending Barry compared to other schools.

What kind of questions did they ask you in the interview? Was it a panel interview or just one on one? Please let me know. Thanks!

True - facilities are nice and not run down. they're constantly upgrading the school w/ new equipment. there's a relatively new building dedicated to the health professions at barry but only 3rd and 4th years take classes there. but there is a nice quiet study room and study lounge available to any podiatry student.

True - professional students aren't allowed to live on campus. the majority of my class lives in the sunny isles or aventura area which are both about 15 minutes from campus.

True - 1st and 2nd year classes are taken on the main campus w/ undergrads but it seems like the only people who use our auditoriums are the podiatry students and the biomedical science graduate students

No classes are taken w/ PA students. NONE. all labs( gross, neuro, and histo) consisted of podiatry students only.

And the first year is definitely not fall and spring only. we started school beginning of september and ended around december 17th. spring semester started on the 6th of jan i think and we'll be done at the end of april. then we get about 2.5-3 weeks off and start back up mid may and go until the end of july. we get all of august off i think.

PM me if you got any questions about 1st year life at barry and i'll try and get back asap.
