Hello all,

I used to have an account here, but it has been quite sometime since I've used it, and have now lost the login information. So just a quick recap on me, I am a sophomore, obviously now one semester away from junior year. My cGPA is 3.28 and my sGPA is right around that same figure.

My question on housing at Barry is: I know that the Miami area is quite expensive; does Barry offer quality AND affordable housing on campus (from your experiences?).

And my question on Podiatry school first years is: I know that many if not all podiatry schools integrate first year Pod students with the DO students. [Maybe not in hindsight, but at the time of] do you feel that the first year is the toughest year of podiatry school?

Please, insight to both questions would really be great. I appreciate your time and help.

Barry does not provide on campus housing to Podiatry students...we have access to everything on campus except the dorms...

As for your other question..the first year is only as hard as you make it...if you study hard and keep up the with the work then you should be fine..in all honesty, we just finished fall semester of our third year and it was by far the most demanding semester we have had so far at Barry

Thank you for the information.. Unfortunately that is what I thought about the housing.

So in short, this means that Barry students will graduate with more debt, because Miami housing is so expensive, right?

I wouldn't go that far..I mean, if you think about, all of the schools except for Iowa are in pretty big cities...I am can tell you for a fact that NYC, Philadelphia and Chicago are by no means cheap..I would even venture to say that it is more expensive to live up north than it is in Miami, but maybe someone from one of those schools can tell you more than I can. Anyways..we are all going to be in debt, a lot of debt, so just pick the school that you think you will be happiest at, work hard, get a good Residency, and the financial stuff will work itself out hopefully. Hope that helps

California costs more too. It depends on what type of apartment you are looking for? You pay a price for safety in the Cities. I've heard as low as $300/month for a studio apartment near school... not recommended. Cheapest cot of living would probably be AZ, Ohio and DMU, from my research back in the day. You also get to do more for the higher cost of living. For me, I chose a vacation spot to move for my wife and kids' sake.
It is nice to be as frugal as possible, but 4 years is a lot to miss out on if you don't spend a little time enjoying it. I have had a blast down here and am excited to move back to the West coast when all is said and done.
I personally thought the 2nd year was the hardest. The 1st year is hard at Barry until you take the 2nd year courses and realize how easy the 1st year classes were. The 3rd year is tough due to the limited time to study because of clinics 3 days/week. Good luck in choosing a school

Thank you for the help, I really appreciate it and found some good points in what you said.

I think I may have been mistaken though... Because I thought that 3rd year was purely clinicals.. But aparently that is not the case? So you have classes and clinicals?? Now I can see why that would be the toughest year.

I posted this on a different thread too (along with other info), but just in case someone happens to look at this thread and not the other one...

I have been looking online for Miami Beach apartments, and I found some very reasonably priced (much to my surprise) from about $850/mo, and others for under $1,000/mo. To me, they appeared to be quite nice. Am I wrong? How were your living conditions?

From Barry's website, I estimate the full cost of attendance (for tuition alone) to be about $112,000 + about $40,000 for housing.

But after speaking to the FINAID department at Des Moines, they estimated the FULL cost of attendance to be $225,000.

Am I missing something? How could anyone get away with living in Miami for cheaper than Des Moines, Iowa?

I truly appreciate the help. It means a lot to me for those who actually take time out of their own day to help others.

Thanks again,

the number you were given for des moines includes everything (travel expenses, insurance, books, etc). the total cost of attendance for barry will end up being about that once you factor those things in (not just tuition and housing expenses).

they do a finaid presentation at the interview and you are shown how the total cost of attendance is calculated.

From what I have heard from people, you can get a pretty decent place for under 1000 (with some utilities included). I was just in south florida a week ago and I was very impressed with some of the places. Your best bet is to get a roommate.

The numbers given from Des Moines is all inclusive. Tuition is pretty similar at all of the schools. You can get a really nice 2 BR apartment with utilities included for $800/month/person with a roommate. This will give you amazing ammenities and close proximity to the beach. You can negotiate rental prices. I ended up getting my first place for $150 less per month with my offer. I would work with a realtor in finding a place to rent. Do not do it on your own or find something on craigslist.
