Hi,

I would like to know the real deal about Barry in general. Like how big is the school? how far away are the clinics from the campus and how is the exposure (how many DIFFERENT cases are seen on a daily basis..i.e. NYCPM has a huge variety?) Do many students get loans or financial assistance? Are classes, lectures, labs, library, etc all in the same building or pretty much spread far apart on the campus? Is the rooms/ technology pretty much up to date? Hows the neighborhood & housing? How come there's so much negative energy being spread around about the school? Hows residency placement and board pass rates? I know its a lot to ask but I was just curious because I have an interview on Friday and I wanted to know what to expect before I get there. Any input will be extremly helpful. Thanks guys!!

You will likely get the chance to speak with current students during your interview day, my group did. You could also ask them then.

From one applicant to another, a lot of your questions are the very ones addressed during your tour and introduction to the school and campus.

Board pass rates etc should be gathered from a primary source like the admissions office or from one of your interviewers. Call Amy Rodriguez , she would be happy to help you out.

Maybe a few current students will pass through with answers, but if not you will find out the answers to your questions and any others you have on Friday. Good luck! :luck:

Actually, you will not be able to speak to too many students because it is finals week. I usually meet with some of the students on interview day and answer questions, but we are going to be swamped with studying. Wish you came earlier or not until January. You'll be surprised with your interview here. I like it...make sure you can see yourself succeeding in this environment. PM me if you have urgent questions.

The 4 Barry owned clinics are each about 15-30min from the school...

The Barry clinics are pretty busy... about as busy as you would want student clinics to be since you want time for teaching on each case. There are also dozens of DPM private practice rotations and multiple hospitals where Barry pod students do g-surg, ER, int med, anesthesia, pathology, etc etc during 3rd year. Dr. Nelson is the clinical dean and does a great job with the clinics. Not sure if pt volume surpasses NYCPM, but diversity will definitely be more... just consider that FL is the widest scope state and NY the narrowest. You will see everything from verruca to Taylor spatial frames in the Barry clinics, and there's a variety of clinical faculty attendings with different practice focuses (sports, surgery, radiology, etc)....

Residency placement of the most recent class is also always on the Barry website (my class at present)...

...most students got one of their top choices, and nearly all of the top third of the class got their very top choice. At any pod school, just like most things in life, it's basically "you get out what you put in." As to why the school has somewhat of a bad rep... who knows? DeKalb, DMC, PSL, Kaiser SF Bay, my program, West Houston, etc get a lot of apps and are not spots that are easy to get yet you see them on the match list. Students in my class obviously out-clerked/interviewed students from DMU, AZ, etc for them, so that goes to show you should probably put more worry into how hard you read/work in pod school rather than just what the brand name on the diploma is. Find the school that's a good fit and apply yourself.

Board pass rate varies every year at every school. At Barry, it's generally a little above the avg for all pod schools. Keep in mind Barry has the most ethnic diversity of the pod schools and generally a high % of ESL students... no, that's not an excuse for failing boards, but it doesn't make it a piece of cake to pass either.

GL at interviews.
