I work part-time at a dental office and at night I work as a bartender. I'm afraid of telling my interviewers that I work in a bar, but I don't know what to say when they ask me what I do other than my part-time dental office job. Should I tell them that I'm a bartender? Thanks in advance.

Being a bartender is nothing to be ashamed of. Just be honest!

i would def mention it......just seem confident while doing so. it also shows your ability to work with people, your "manual dexterity" skills, and so much more...

I bartended for years and had no problems telling that to adcoms. It is lucrative, the hours are conducive to school and you enjoy people...just put a positive spin on it.

You're applying to dental school, not a seminary
wink.gif

I put my bartending experience in my application. It helped alot with manual dexterity. I didnt do alot of tricks per se but for acute movements and memorization of different drinks is pretty impressive

I bartended before and during dental school and even served many of my faculty in dental school. Trust me, they will not look down on the fact, they will most likely embrace it. If you wrote "Beer Funneling Champ" in your awards section of your application that would be one thing, but bartending should not be a deterrent for any school!

Dont Apply To Loma Linda Lol!😉

yah i was about to say....it would be a deterrent for Loma Linda. a question on their secondary questions your use of alcohol/drugs. not sure if saying i just serve it but don't drink it would work. kind of along the same lines of, "i distribute cocaine...but don't use it"

this is a old thread but i just want to clear it out.

i am currently in loma linda and i know one of my upper class who was a bouncer of a strip club and there is one guy is alcohol/ drug addict recovery. he sometimes shared his experience with us in the class.

they don't discriminate you just because your past, they don't expect everyone is like a saint!

I heard that it is actually sort of rare to find an alcoholic bartender. A job is a job. It will show you have social skills because it is largely customer service based.... Now, it's the non-bartenders that you have to watch out for!

I knew I forgot something in my application! I have been pouring beverages for myself since I was 5 years old. Oh, and I can feed myself with little or no mess now. This may be a stretch.

HAHAHAHAHHA. I got that secondary and laughed then threw it in the trash and saved 75 bucks. Please list your alcohol and tobacco consumption in the past, present, and future?

I told them i was a bartender. I also said I meet a lot of cute girls because of it.

i thought bartending = automatic acceptance? i gotta re-prioritize

dude, a job's a job (as long as it's legal). I would capitalize on it if I were you. You get to deal with ethical decisions daily (sell to a minor or not) and you should be good with hand-eye coordination.... plus u can amke a tasty drink...who WOULDN'T take you 😍

I use to work at Hooters and I had that in my application. Whats the big deal? 😉

but yeah my personal statement also included bartending as my hobby. the people at nova loved it and we talked about mojitos for like 15 minutes during my interview.

Guess which school became my #1? hahaaa

I think Columbia is feeling upstaged by NYU in NYC.😀

With all this positive talk about bartending, I think I'm gonna take a bartending class instead of volunteering...at least I'd make some bucks doing it..haha

If I was on the admissions committee, I would first accept you into my class, and then hire you for all the committee functions 👍

Gotta keep this offbeat thread alive. Anybody with unusual work experiences?

Dude its not like your applying to a seminary.... I am only speaking from my own experience at Marquette, but most everyone(faculty/staff) I have met at the school enjoys having a drink. Bartending is a good skill, you have to think on your feet and remember orders. I worked in a kitchen where I would have to remember 20+ orders at a time, it definately comes in handy when doing a prophy and being able to take sulcus depths on a whole quadrant and then righting it down rather, then doing it tooth by tooth. You could also be quite popular at parties, the only drinks I can make are (blank) and sodas, or beer.
