Hi everyone,

I have been reading some interview feedback comments re: MSUCOM and a number of you have stated that you don't like the idea of being placed at 1 of 12 base hospitals for your 3rd and 4th year rotations. So that there aren't a lot of negative assumptions made about this feature of the school, here are a few simple facts that you should know.

1) These spots are not "raffled" off, rather you choose which hospital you would like to rotate through and if it is overselected then it will be raffled off so that everyone who wants that hospital has a fair chance. This happens to 3 or 4 hospitals at most. Currently, MSU is looking at expanding the network of hospitals because our students are really in demand!

2) You are not STUCK at that hospital for the next two years. Your 3rd year consists of 6 mos of outpatient experience at various clinics (i.e. OB/GYN, peds, etc) in the area of your hospital and then, of course, the inpatient experience at the hospital. You get to choose "out rotations" which allow you to go ANYWHERE in the world (i.e. even Africa) for a rather significant number of rotations so that you can see how medicine is practiced in different parts of the state, a different state, or even a different country.

3) Even though I am only a 2nd year, I have had a lot of interaction with 3rd and 4th year students and they have a lot of positive things to say about base hospital rotations. You form strong connections with the staff and orient yourselves with an area and its patient base. You can always choose to do an out rotation if you know that another hospital has an excellent program in that particular specialty.

4) ALL of the base hospitals are sufficient teaching hospitals from what I've learned. They all have something special to offer the students and everyone gets educated properly and has fun doing it.

I know that this is long but I hope that this clears things up. If you have ANY questions, please let me know. I hope that this clears up some misunderstanding!

Thanks,
Julia
