BASE Jump

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That is frigging amazing stuff right there. Wow.

Ever since seeing the footage of those guys who first did this (in Norway? Switzerland? Wherever it was...), I have wanted to do this. It looks frigging ridiculously fun. I've jumped out of planes and off bridges before but never done the BASE thing- looks so fun.

The idea of snowboarding off a cliff and literally flying- maybe with one of those crazy new wingsuit things- is very appealing to this adrenaline junkie. My wife would never let me do it, but I can still daydream...

Off topic- I'm about ready to make the jump up to splitboarding- any recommendations? I've always used Burton boards and would probably go that route unless you know of a good reason not too. Getting ready to drop some serious coin on backcountry gear, maybe after the season when stuff gets cheap. Did a lot of sidecountry hiking yesterday at the local hill and I gotta start skinning up to some of these BC bowls out here...

For splitboards check out Venture snowboards, made here locally and people seem to really like them. The Prior board is better than the Voile fo sho. I rode a Voile this year and it was stiff, real stiff. I ride a Unity special order for me. It is the exact copy of my everyday board. Only 7 made last year. As far as Burton, I have no idea. Not too many people ride those around here. I think there are better boards out there. The Unity and Venture boards are hand made and the Burton is mass produced, no attention to detail. Expect to pay from $750-1200 for a new one. Check out:

As far as beckons/transceivers, I like the Tracker: http://www.winterfix.com/Itemdesc.asp?ic=bca0004&gclid=CP78q9zbrpICFQKLxwodQlkKQg
And this is a great price.
Best shovel: http://www.winterfix.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=102175
Best pack comes with avalung and with the avalanches this year I wouldn't go without one: http://www.winterfix.com/ItemMatrix.asp?GroupCode=bld0054&MatrixType=1
Then you will need a probe. Go with a medium length one. Anyone buried more than 2 meters is a corpse recovery anyway.

That is a little much for me. I choose life:scared:

I love the little digs on Spokane, WA in the movie.:meanie:

Thanks for the advice, Noy. Appreciate splitboard recs...

Will definitely look into that company and see what I can find out here. I'm definitely willing to pay a premium for superior quality, given that these are potentially life-and-death situations out there. I gotta start lurking on that splitboard forum and try and learn a thing or two.

SoCal had a big problem with avalanches this year and a few fatalities out of bounds at a place where avys are essentially unheard of, was pretty sad. People here just assume we're safe since we're in SoCal and go get themselves into serious trouble after big storms. That avalung backpack looks awesome- will definitely hit up one of those.

There are people out here who hit the BC solo- check out this link for example- but I definitely need to find some people to go do this with. Gotta have someone to dig me out if I need it...

I have heard of these. Very interesting. But did you see the price 599 euros thats $945. 😱

It is life however, can anyone put a price on it?

sort of expensive but at the same level as a new board + bindings... apparently it's reusable your can change the gas cartridge.

By the way, leaving for AK friday. One full week of heliskiing/snowboarding. Will have pics on my return.

"Venomous hatred" doesn't even begin to do my jealousy justice. You vile lucky bastard.

Can't wait to see pics. Have fun and stay safe.

*Sighs and looks forward to a bright future far far away from dispo rounds and nursing home admissions when an insane concept like "a week of heli in Alaska" is a real possibility and not strictly confined to a daydream between the 4th and 5th H&P of the day...*
