MS1 here trying to find a summer research project.

I want to do something in the lab because I would rather spend 8 hours a day running experiments than reviewing charts or distributing questionnaires.

My question is, what sort of basic science research would fall under the purview of EM? Are there any institutions focusing on bench EM research?

Check out the bench research going on at Carolinas (inflammation)-that's about the only program where I saw an emphasis on bench stuff. Yale also mentioned they have access, but i'm not sure if anything is currently going on.
good luck,

(strongly consider NOT doing ANYTHING this summer!!!)

Where are you at or where do you want to spend the summer and I'll give you some names. Ischemia/reperfusion injury is big right now in EM basic research

I shot you a PM. Thanks!

tox in general has basic science research going on

I did a rotation at Einstin in Philly, and I know they were doing some basic reserach stuff. Can't tell you what it was, though. I don't even remember what an interleukin is. I-CAM wha? The only acid-base interaction I know of is vinegar that breaks down my steak into a nice tender piece of meat.

Q

I am also an MSI looking to do some EM research this summer, but am looking for something clinically oriented (I'm not too keen on bench work). I've got until the end of my 4th year to get this project done (it's part of our curriculum), but I want to get the bulk of the research done this summer. If you had the time and desire to research something that has interested you in your training, what might that be?

I suggest you pick up a copy of Annals of EM or some other journal and get an idea of what interests you. Then see if your interests align with those of any of the faculty at your institution. Lots of stuff going on with: point of care testing for HIV, ultrasound, disaster readiness/management, informatics, and that's all I can think of off the top of my head but there are many many more!

Since I got several request for geographic specific research programs I'll teach you a little pubmed trick

On the main pubmed search page click on "limits"

At the bottom of the page under "tag terms" select affiliation. This is a field that pubmed normally doesn't search but it contains the authors affiliation and it usually has the full address for the author. If you then search using "city or state of interest" AND emergency you will find every publication from an emergency department in that city or state. Even for fairly publication intensive areas its still only a few hundred hits which you can quickly scan to see if it interests you. If you find an article you are interested in then go to the institutions web site and search for the authors. Most of the time at least the PI will have a web site listing their background and other research interests.

Sweet trick. I didn't know about that one.

Thanks!

Take care,
Jeff

One of the Harvard hospitals (I think it is Beth Israel) has a basic science lab attached to the ED that is run by a husband/wife couple who are both MD PhDs. They are attendings in the ED and also run the lab. Hope this helps...
