Hello everyone,

There is this program called Michael E. DeBakey Summer Surgery Program at Baylor medical school. I was wondering how much it would help me to attend this program?

Of course, I have to be accepted to attend this program but I wanted to know if it is worth it to spend 8 weeks of summer when I can do summer school,research(paid),volunteering/shadowing, and possibly study for MCAT.

One more question, does anyone know how competitive it is to get into this program?

Here is the link if you want to know more about this program

Thanks🙂

This is kind of interesting. I'm not sure - but I think this would be something helpful to your application. It would show that you did have the motivation to pursue a program like this, and that you had an excellent amount of direct interaction with doctors of various specialties. Plus, from what I just read off the website - they have these lecture series where you learn quite a bit about the various types of surgery specialties and subspecialties. And of course you get to learn what life as a doctor can be like - which is good for your overall experience as well.

Ultimately - medschools would want to talk about this at your interview probably, to find out what you think you learned from it.

As far as whether this program is competitive - I don't know. You could try contacting them and asking them how many people generally apply to the program. They will probably exaggerate, but you can extrapolate a guess. But this will give you a rough idea of how large the competition is. I would guess something like this is pretty competitive, at least within Texas. I'm positive most Texas pre-meds (at least the hardcore ones) know about it. Maybe one of them can post here and tell you about it.

But I do want to let you know that I'm sure there is a downside (as there always is). You will lose time you could spend studying for MCAT or addressing other areas of your application, but I think that this experience would have enough positives to offset the negatives. Also realize it would be a relatively unique experience (most applicants haven't done summer programs like that) and could set you slightly apart from the others.

I would consult your pre-med advisor to see what he thinks your specific needs are - as far as your application goes. If this is something that will make up for your weaknesses then do it. Plus you'll build some useful contacts - and if you apply to Baylor, I am sure they will remember you.

I say go for it (especially if you plan on applying to Baylor Med). I never got into either of their summer programs (DeBakey and SMART), but I still got into their medical school, so don't worry if they don't show you love this time around. Best of luck!

I have applied to this program and I was wondering, if you got accepted to this program last year.

thank you

I have applied to the Michael E. DeBakey summer program as well and was wondering when you were accepted.

I applied and was accepted last year. It is an excellent program. Feel free to PM me with any questions. I think most of us heard April 13th.

Do you know if you will get a letter if you werent accepted? Sorry, I haven't received anthing from the program yet and am kind of stressing. haha

Has anyone who applied this year heard anything yet?

I applied this year and just heard back via email, so you should probably watch your inbox rather than your mailbox. Best of luck with your application!

i applied to the debakey surgery program and got an email of acceptance today 4/26 that was dated 4/23. i have to turn it down for another program though, so best of luck in getting it

allinblue, out of curiosity, what was the program you chose instead/why did you choose it? I decided to do the debakey program, but really know very little about pre-med internships. I applied to a few other interesting-looking internships but have only heard back from this one and one other.

other than debakey i applied to research programs at UT-H med school and MD anderson cancer center. the reason i chose research at MD anderson is mostly financial since they give you a good stipend whereas debakey is unpaid.

if i was in a better financial situation i might have a harder time deciding since i'm really interested in surgery. but cancer research sounds decent for the summer too, and i could use either research or clinical on my app.

i hope you have fun with debakey!! it sounds like a great experience. let me know how it is 🙂
