I am a neophyte to the process. Can someone tell me what it means to be board certified? Is this different from passing Step 3?

For a specialty like Derm, is it the American Academy of Dermatology that certifies you or licences you? How do they compare to American Osteopathic Association of Dermatology?

What is your background? Are you medical student or an osteopathic student?

With regard to BE/BC, this pertains to the medical specialty under which you are training. BE qualifies you to sit for the board exam for the governing body for your specialty. BC means you have completed the residency, pass the specialty boards, and are in good standing with the specialty field.

Passing Step 3 grants you the license to practice medicine/surgery in your locality.
