Hey I wanted to put this in What Are My Chances, but I figured this would be better suited in the "Canadian" section of these forums, considering I'm... y'know... Canadian, and all.

First semester, First year of college (Simon Fraser University).
Screwed up royally. I've never had to study before in high school and enjoyed, by SFU's grading standards, an A- / 3.67 GPA.
My transition, needless to say, went badly, and I have no one to blame but myself 🙁

Long story short, Im sitting at around a 2.33 GPA - roughly a 68%-74%
TRYING to major in BSc. Behavioural Neuroscience

But THAT'S NOT EVEN THE WORST NEWS:
I'm sitting on the cusp of passing BIO 101, with a 53%, my final is this week (worth 40% of my grade). In order to even get credit towards my major I need a 68 :scared:

Enough of my pity story +pity+

ASSUMING I get my act together, even for second semester, how big of a hole have I dug myself?
And how do retakes factor in when applying?

Feeling pretty bad... But an honest reply would be much appreciated.

Listen- you're going to have to work really hard, and for much longer, than other people at this point. I don't really have much time to reply right now, but suffice it to say you are facing an uphill battle. You have to get yourself up to a 85-ish-something level, AND get great extracurriculars. It will be really hard.

Let's talk about next term. Are you ready? Should you take the rest of the school year off and work? If you have poor grades in this term, it may be your best shot since many schools (other than UBC) look at only full-time years. UBC has shifted to a very heavily-GPA-based scoring system and it works seriously against you. Perhaps next year it will change again, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Join us over at PM101 where we can talk more about it. That's where all the canadian kids hang out. Hopefully it will be up soon!

See it sounds like a good idea, but, and it's another long story regarding a bad high school Academic Advisor, the problem is I don't have the prerequisites necessary to even get into first year chem and physics. Which is why I NEED next semester. I'm doing the supplementary chem, math, and physics courses required to get me up to speed... 🙁

I knew from the start it was going to be harder for me than most. I didn't know that I would just mess everything up from the get go :bang:

P.S. I'm keeping an eye on the PM101 thread. For sure I'll head over when I see that it's mos defs up

You NEED next semester, but you can have it in a year from now. That's what I'm saying. You can leave school for a short time, come back, and be better than ever.
