As a first-year student, all of this is extremely new and overwhelming for me! I'm just wondering how exactly are grades entered and calculated for the med school application? ( ex: I know that there's a science gpa & a regular gpa) but what counts as "BCPM"? ( do undergrad gen - ed classes count?)
How is each grade counted? does the science gpa matter more? where can I find a printable version of the AMCAS medical school application?

Thanks,

Primedgal

BCPM means "Bio/chem/physics/math," and is from college coursework only. schools get to see your overall gpa and your BCPM gpa... and do with them as they will. it probably varies by school how they value the two gpa's. AMCAS is online these days, you could probably get a copy somewhere on the website. i didn't even look at this stuff until i was a junior in college, so don't feel like you need to get focused on anything med school related until at least a year from now... just try to keep a good gpa and enjoy college for now 🙂.

this question is a little off topic but i didnt want to start a whole new thread...

If you have an F in a BCPM class then retook for a C does the AMCAS use the 0.0 plus the 2.0 as two distinct grades when calculating BCPM gpa or does it average the two as a 1.0 and use that?

in other words, are they two distinct grades that go into the average or are the two grades averaged before they go into the overall BCPM?

If it averages it to a 1.0 before entering that would be awesome because the 0 and the 2.0 both included would kill me

I think its a 0 and a 2.0

damn that sucks, thats gonna destroy my BCPM gpa

No, the two grades, one of which being a 0, will hurt my average more than if it were just a single 1.0.

rather than being divided between 10 BCPM courses it will be divided by 11, which definately hurts the ole gpa

How does the GPA factor in if you have withdrawn from a course? Does that negatively affect you as well, like if you failed the course and receive 0 quality points for the credit hours?

thats awesome Lokhtar thanks!

Withdrawn courses do not affect the GPA calculation in any way, it's as if you didn't take the course (though it still shows up on the AMCAS as a W)
