Becoming a Dental Hygienist with Vehicular Manslaughter

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What were the circumstances of the offense? Was it a felony or misdemeanor? Did you serve jail time and if yes, how long? This information is important i.e drunk driving vs. unintentional mistake.

I'm answering this for my mom, since she's still serving the sentence. So, felony, obviously. 6 years in jail. Circumstances were that an old lady pulled her car out in front of her without looking. My mom hit her, and she died later in the hospital. Don't think anything was found in my mom's system, though some Xanax may have been detected. I'm not sure.

Doesn't sound good. Your mom will probably have a better chance running for the senate seat of the other vehicular killer, Ted Kennedy.

I think the bigger concern is rather she would be able to attain a job...ragardless of the degrees she receives.

I'd hire her in a heartbeat. If we had a patient who stiffs us on a bill, I'd know who to send to collect!

Would I be able to become one with this charge on me? How likely is it that I'll be stopped because of it?

This depends on the state in which you live.

The dental practice act is the law that regulates the "who, what, were, when and how" for dental professionals. Do a google search of the dental practice act in your state.
(Most states make it hard for a convected felon to get a license. Some states make it impossible.)

Good Luck

You can be charged and convicted of vehicular manslaughter for an unfortunate mistake?

I looked Florida's up, and I think she'd still be able to get it. The only thing which is anywhere near it is a line saying that anyone that's been convicted of any crime related to medical practices can't get the license. If anyone knows better, I'd like to know.

Yeah. At least in Florida. Down here, all that has to be shown is that someone died in the accident. The actual cause of the accident doesn't matter. The cop that saw the scene said that it was obvious that the old lady caused it. This statement was considered insubstantial, since the crime doesn't address responsibility at all.

Just makes no sense to me to throw someone in jail for an accident that they didnt cause or had no way of changing the outcome... but then again laws rarely make much sense.

That's what we've been saying since it happened. Then again, the old woman was a friend of the judge, so I don't think the law actually mattered in this case.

Wouldn't that be considered "a conflict of interest"? I feel you are leaving some information out here...

" Don't think anything was found in my mom's system, though some Xanax may have been detected. I'm not sure. "

How are you not sure.. either it was or wasn't, and that is probably what made the difference.

Maybe it's just me but six years seems pretty harsh for an accident that wasn't her fault.

dont mean to be rude; but the story has many holes in it. if the cop says that it wasnt your moms fault she would not be charged with anything. do you remember when donte stallworth killed a man while drunk in FL? he got 30 days in jail:

http://www.newser.com/story/62032/nfl-player-gets-30-days-in-dui-death.html

so for your mom to get 6 yrs for something thats not her fault because the old lady was friends with the judge is just not true. i'm sure theres more to the story; and i'm sorry to say that your mom will probably not be working as a hygienist

Ok, all the **** posted above is meh. All it matters is if your mom will get and keep her state hygiene license. If she can get her state hygiene license, she will get a job.

At my office I do the hirings, I have fired and hired several hygienists and I have never snooped around someone's personal life or background or history, I just care that she/he has the appropriate licensure and is a good fit for the office.

Wasn't ment to be **** talk... What her charges are will determine if she can get licensure. No one can tell the OP one way or another becasue there really was no information given to us to make a determination.

My best advise is call where ever or whom ever your mom would obtain this license from and ask what disqualifies one from receiving a license. As stated above.. if she is still eligible she will find work.
