Becoming a DO Medical School Professor?

Does anyone have any information on the process required to teach medical school? Do I need a MD/DO degree + a Ph.D or will either the medical degree or Ph.D separately suffice?

Depends upon what field. To teach clinical medicine, you need the DO or MD. But for any of the basic sciences, a PhD will suffice. I've also seen MS Anatomy instructors/lecturers on faculty at both DO and MD schools.

Yes more than likely a school will want your degree to be in a field that is similar to the coursework that you want to teach. So you won't be teaching Clinical Anatomy with Ph.D. in genetics.

There are some degrees that allow for some overlap however, I do know of a few professors with a degree in MolecBio that also teach Cell Bio. However from an institutional stand point I'm sure it's preferred to have a degree in the same field.

You'll need to do a post-doctoral fellowship. While I believe that there are some PhD programs designed for people who want to teach, med schools want to see that you have the ability to stand up in front of an audience and deliver content, and have some research productivity to boot.

Side note: my wife received a PhD in Chemistry and later got a Biochem faculty position. But 100% agree with Altered...your field needs to be similar to that of the position.
