I've really enjoyed my time on SDN, and I hope that you all have a great new year. I wanted to take a moment and thank T4C who has been a fixture since before I showed up.

So good luck to you all and best wishes for a prosperous new year to all!

Mark

Happy new years to you too! Why are you leaving SDN?

Hey Mark, I lurk a lot but I just wanted to say thank you for the HPSP info you have posted over the last (couple?) years. It has been invaluable to me and along with other posters has convinced me to apply. I hope you'll consider coming back at some point.

That's too bad. I'll definitely miss your posts and your candor.

Happy new year, though. Take good care of the MINI.

I learned a lot from your posts. Best of luck!

I enjoyed our discussions here. Best of luck to you.

Sorry to see you go! 🙁 Best wishes to you and yours!

Bye Mark. Best of luck to a fellow "older" student. I've enjoyed your posts.
~ Psychmama (the original one).😉

Too bad you have to go but I guess we all will at one point. You've been a great help and will be missed. Good luck 👍

Don't leave us youngin's on our own!

Thanks for all your help, Mark. You can always be counted on to be the voice of reason on this crazy forum.

It was always nice to read your posts. Best of luck, Mark! :luck:

As a longtime lurker, I've enjoyed your posts, Mark. I hope you find success in whatever endeavors you pursue!

Bye Mark. Thanks for your help.
Good luck. :hello:

It's too bad I caught you just as you are leaving! I'm in the Navy and very interested in doing the USUHS program. Anyone out there that has actual experience with the program and/or being a Navy Psychologist?? Thanks!

I guess this is a question for the moderator, but is this an appropriate use of forum space? This thread just strikes me as odd.

Figures that you disappear once I pop back in (not that I've been around much myself the last year or so). :meanie:

G'luck in your endeavors, Mark. I wish you the best. :luck:

How come no one has asked why he is leaving. Others check in from time to time after they go off on internship and move forward in there careers. This whole thread does strike me as odd.

I asked. There was no reply.

If I recall correctly, it coincided with drama on another thread.

Good luck!! You have been an AWESOME source of info, so appreciated. thank you for taking the time to help out!

And yes, this thread is an appropriate use of the forum 😉 Take care!

I agree. I don't understand why a longtime member saying goodbye wouldn'tbe appropriate. After all, we don't have to talk shop all the time, just look at the old March Madness posts 🙂.

This whole thing just has an Axis II vibe.

Hmmmm. . . . appropropriateness of a long-time member saying goodbye to other forum members versus the appropriateness of throwing out diagnoses via the internet.

Gimme a break guys. What does leaving the forum mean? Last I checked, your log-in info is not blocked when you graduate. Plenty of interns (ahem), postdocs, and faculty members contribute here. So is he going to a deserted island? Prison? Nothing is preventing him from being here. In fact he has since posted under a different username. Can't speak for others, but that is probably where the histrionic/axis II jokes are coming from. But if anything diagnostic-sounding offends you (seriously?) then let me state it in non-clinical terms: it is f*cking weird.

Well, yes, I spied a flounce too but that still doesn't make it appropriate to suggest that there is personality pathology underlying the behavior--even if it is joking, and I did not get the impression that it was. And I like Mark and hold respect for him, so that's why I didn't bring it up. I think most of us have flounced from a message board in our day.

Dramatic exit? Yes, I agree with you. But, I do not think his post is against the forum's rules. As futureapppsy2 mentioned, we have gone off-topic before. We don't alway focus on psychology.

But, I do know that it is unethical to make diagnoses of individuals who we have not met and only chat with via the internet. And, like cara susanna, I did not detect that KayJay85 was joking. But, even if poster was attempting to be humorous, it really, in my opinion, is not appropriate on a professional forum.

Unethical? Whoa!😱 I didn't realize that posting here was part of anyone's clinical practice. Are you saying you have never heard someone say "that is so axis II" or "she is so type A" in a joking manner? You may not think that is appropriate on a professional forum. Others may not think it appropriate to start a thread to basically announce the retirement of a username.

Oh, oh, oh! *jumps up & down* Long time member here! Can I make my own diagnosis here?

*clears throat as everyone waits oh, so patiently*

Stickupassitis - It's all the rage. I hear it's even being introduced in the newest edition of the DSM. If you don't like that conceptualization, I hear narcissistic PD is still around for the high & almighty amongst us. 👍

THANK YOU! I was wondering when you were going to show up, btw. Since this is partly your mess. 😉 *just kidding*

In essence this is what it boils down to. This thread will in no way benefit anyone who comes here seeking info about pursuing a doctorate in psychology. Sure, people veer off topic, but opening a thread to retire your username is dramatic and egotistical--to avoid terms like histrionic and narcissistic.

DISCLAIMER: Anyone who thinks I am making a clinical diagnosis should really step away from your computer and rejoin the real world in progress. Oops! Oh, no! Now I am providing intervention on SDN!!!

Exactly. It's a bit disturbing to see such strong/defensive reactions. I find it odd that no one overreacted to the 'histrionic flavor' comment, yet the 'axis II vibe' comment was met with such a condescending response. Seeing this makes me hesitant to ever post a joke on here myself, without making absolutely sure to add some lauging smilies so people don't get upset.

Can people please let this die and get back to psychology? Or even CSI Miami, or Law and Order, or anything else but arguing? 🙂

FTR, I think both the 'histrionic' and axis II comments were improper, but hey, what do I know? I choose not to respond to each & every asshat on these forums anymore because most of these threads are repeats to me anyway nowadays. And I have better ways to spend my time. Live & learn a little. :shrug

It's a freakin' forum, folks. There are members on this particular forum who have been around a helluva lot longer than others, and there are members who are a bit more personable and/or helpful than others. For those longstanding members of the community, in any forum, it's not completely unheard of for them to bid adieu when they part ways. If you don't like the manner in which they choose to do so, bite your tongue. Why bother wasting your time on a thread that is obviously of no interest to you? Let those who wish to participate do so; otherwise, scram young'uns.

G'luck to all who are applying for whatever it is you may be applying for at this stage of whatever! :luck:

Is it any less egotistical and histrionic for someone who has been around a couple months to feel the need to dictate whether or not a long-time poster (who, for the record, has made far more positive contributions here than any of the folks making a stink about this post) have the right to say goodbye to people they have been communicating with for years before deciding to stop posting? How are we even so certain it has anything to do with the other thread? As I mentioned elsewhere there have been many discussions that were far more heated that passed without incident. Maybe Mark's New Year's resolution was to cut down on internet time-wasting. I forget where he is at in his training, but I know he is military...its not out of the question that he is being sent someplace he won't have internet access.

The way I see it, Mark had a (relatively) minor disagreement with a couple folks, said goodbye for unknown reasons and left. People assumed they were the source of his departure, that the entire discussion was more influential than I suspect it was, and then start a discussion on whether or not saying goodbye is a sign of pathology and should be deleted. For the record, its not the first time its happened on this board (and was a far less dramatic exit than some), nor is it at all out of the ordinary for message boards with long-time members.

If there is any histrionicity (is that a word?) and grandiosity going on, it certainly seems to be going both ways to me - and as far as I can tell Mark is gone at this point. I didn't partake in the original discussion but if anything would have likely leaned against Mark in it so I don't think I'm being unreasonably biased here.

I'm not sure why you would think having posted here longer than others has any more to do with this than the price of tea in China. People contribute their knowledge here. If I have a question, a more senior trainee or psychologist would have a lot more to offer than a senior member at an earlier training stage because they have experienced more in the real world. I don't care whether they have 5 posts or 5K. This forum is a professional forum and I judge contributions by experience not online seniority which, in itself is kind of sad.

I really have nothing else to say on the matter. If anyone wants to piss and moan in defense of Mark feel free to PM me and I will pretend to care. This whole thread is pointless and the fact that it has not been closed is insane considering the moderator is so gung ho to condense threads and close fruitless discussions in other situations. Since he won't I will absolve myself of the silliness. 🙂

Thanks for educating me, otherwise I never would've guessed that it's improper for someone to make histrionic and axis II jokes (though as a longtime lurker before registering I've seen plenty of them on here) but that it's proper to call people asshats and say they have 'stickupassitis'.

I thought this was a useful forum with plenty of nice and helpful people, but all this petty bitching just makes me want to 'scram' for good and find a forum without so many immature arguments.

The point was not about real world experience in psychology...I don't disagree with anything you said there. My point was that I'm not sure what "qualifications" you have to decide what is an appropriate use of forum space. However, if the first time someone invites you over to their apartment you (unsolicited) start questioning their arrangement of the furniture and continue to belabor the point even when the owner and most other guests clearly don't have a problem with it...that doesn't strike you as strange? I don't particularly care if that person has a degree in interior decorating or not...it seems irrelevant.

I've stayed out of it til now, but I needed to step in to point the absolute absurdity that a thread that basically says "G'luck, happy new year" and likely would have come and gone quickly has filled with vitriol and remains at the top of the forum. Mark's not to blame for that one.

Well, okay, it's true that Axis II jokes are fun. I will concede that. But I think the "histrionic flavor" joke was actually a joke, whereas the "Axis II" comment wasn't. And we all go throughout life thinking that certain people have certain personality styles, but it's not always wise to say it.

Awww, I wish you hadn't just edited this. The way you initially put it was objective, funny, and dead on, imo. Thank you, cara, well said. 😍

Sorry, I think my original post would have elicited some heated responses and I am not the spitfire forumite I used to be. 😉

Jeeze Louise, people! Let's not argue about professionalism and just let the mod make those calls. There's more drama in this forum than there was in my junior high school...

I dunno, it's still one of the better forums of which I'm a member, drama-wise. Is that sad? 😉

Cara, aren't your outside interests in musical theatre? That kind of makes sense... 😛

This 👍.

Are we supposed to believe that we can ascertain enough about other posters on this forum to throw around labels like "histrionic" and "Axis II", but can't possibly know each other well enough to want to say goodbye?

As for what saying goodbye means, it means exactly that--he decided to stop visiting this site. It's something I've considered myself, especially when the same arguments keep getting rehashed. Good to know that if I decide to say goodbye to folks whom I've had lots of conversations with, it will be seen as diagnosable.

For the record when I posted my snarky comment I had just read an article about how Senator Rand Paul diagnosed the AZ shooter with paranoid schizophrenia even though he is a Rand-Paul-Certified ophthalmologist with six weeks training in psychiatry. Hey hey look those flames are flying off in another direction...
