It's a little early I'm only a junior, but I have 2 questions I wanted to get out of the way. If this matters I'm a psych major with a biopsych certificate; 3 semesters of research, 1 national conference presentation and a good gpa (My psych major GPA is a 4.0....while my overall undergrad GPA is a 3.7). I have Inorganic Chem 1+2, Genetics, Experimental Psych 1+2, Ecology, Intro to Bio, Neuropharm and Neuropathlogy currently under my belt. My questions are

1: What are some good Behavorial Neuroscience/Cognitive Neuro programs to look into for grad school? My research in my lab is currently on GCR affects on rat central nervous systems and I really love the research. I'm looking to go into Academia/research or research in the government sector. I'm just curious of some good programs to look into to consider going to. I know a lot depends on my GRE...so take this all with a grain of salt. I'm looking for a more psych based program rather than a bio based program (IE in the psych department but collaboration with the sciences) rather than a pure 'without people interaction stereotypical' neuroscience program...if that makes any sense?

2: Any advice current PHD canidate students can give me? I dunno how hard these programs are to get into compared to other phd science programs.

If it helps at all below are a list of schools I'm currently considering along with the program research focus at each school. If any of these schools you endorse, or maybe want to tell me to steer away from...or add to the list that would be awesome.

Brown [Psychology PHD (cognitive psych or Cognitive neuroscience focus)]
University of Washington [Behavioral Neuroscience]
George Washington University [Cognitive Neuroscience]
Georgetown University [Interdisciplinary Program In Neuroscience]
University of Delaware [Behavioral Neuroscience]
Washington University in St Louis [Behavior Brain and Cognition]
Johns Hopkins University [Biopsychology]
Duke University [Cognitive Neuroscience]
University of Michigan – Anne Arbor [Cognitive Neuroscience or Biopsychology]
University of California – Los Angeles [Behavioral Neuroscience]
University of California – Berkley [Behavioral Neuroscience]*
University of California – San Diego [Experimental Psychology: Behavioral Neuroscience]
Northwestern University [Brain, Behavior and Cognition]*
University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill [Behavioral Neuroscience]
Rutgers University [Behavioral Neuroscience]
Boston University [Brain, Behavior and Cognition]
Tulane University [Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience]
Yale University [Neuroscience]
Princeton University [Neuroscience]

Thanks a lot

My best advice would be to find the area of Behavioural Neuroscience that you'd like to pursue. What questions are you interested in? This could be broad or narrow. Then, find the profs who are doing good work in that area of research, and apply to those schools. 🙂
